Our clients already had a cottage on Torch Lake that they loved to visit. It was a 1960s ranch that worked just fine for their needs. However, the lower level walkout became entirely unusable due to water issues. After purchasing the lot next door, they hired us to design a new cottage. Our first task was to situate the home in the center of the two parcels to maximize the view of the lake while also accommodating a yard area. Our second task was to take particular care to divert any future water issues. We took necessary precautions with design specifications to water proof properly, establish foundation and landscape drain tiles / stones, set the proper elevation of the home per ground water height and direct the water flow around the home from natural grade / drive. Our final task was to make appealing, comfortable, living spaces with future planning at the forefront. An example of this planning is placing a master suite on both the main level and the upper level. This 800 square foot Accessory Dwelling Unit steps down a lush site in the Portland Hills. The street facing balcony features a sculptural bronze and concrete trough spilling water into a deep basin. The split-level entry divides upper-level living and lower level sleeping areas. Generous south facing decks, visually expand the building's area and connect to a canopy of trees. The mid-century modern details and materials of the main house are continued into the addition. Inside a ribbon of white-washed oak flows from the entry foyer to the lower level, wrapping the stairs and walls with its warmth. Upstairs the wood's texture is seen in stark relief to the polished concrete floors and the crisp white walls of the vaulted space. This light and airy lake house features an open plan and refined, clean lines that are reflected throughout in details like reclaimed wide plank heart pine floors, shiplap walls, V-groove ceilings and concealed cabinetry. Situated on what others may consider a difficult, steep, hillside lot, Crome Architecture’s design of the house utilizes the sloping site to create tiered, multi-level living spaces that add dimensional interest to the house, while performing a worthwhile task of minimizing disturbance to the natural site. The tiered design not only benefits the environment by limiting excavation and offsite hauling, it also provides the opportunity for the separation of public and private spaces and offers an added bonus- an outdoor living courtyard. Strategically placed skylights and high efficiency windows were part of the design to provide ample natural light and cross ventilation to reduce energy use associated with artificial lighting and mechanical cooling needs. Sited among majestic redwood trees, the house was carefully designed to preserve these natural assets and take advantage of the views in this beautiful wooded setting.
