We used the timber frame of a century old barn to build this rustic modern house. The barn was dismantled, and reassembled on site. Inside, we designed the home to showcase as much of the original timber frame as possible. Photography by Todd Crawford

Rear facade is an eight-foot addition to the existing home which matched the line of the adjacent neighbor per San Francisco planning codes. Facing a large uphill backyard the new addition houses an open kitchen below with large sliding glass pocket door while above is an enlarged master bedroom suite. Combination of stucco and wood breaks up the facade as do the new Fleetwood aluminum windows.

Set in the garden beside a traditional Dutch Colonial home in Wellesley, Flavin conceived this boldly modern retreat, built of steel, wood and concrete. The building is designed to engage the client’s passions for gardening, entertaining and restoring vintage Vespa scooters. The Vespa repair shop and garage are on the first floor. The second floor houses a home office and veranda. On top is a roof deck with space for lounging and outdoor dining, surrounded by a vegetable garden in raised planters. The structural steel frame of the building is left exposed; and the side facing the public side is draped with a mahogany screen that creates privacy in the building and diffuses the dappled light filtered through the trees. This 2,000 square foot vacation home is located in the rocky mountains. The home was designed for thermal efficiency and to maximize flexibility of space. Sliding panels convert the two bedroom home into 5 separate sleeping areas at night, and back into larger living spaces during the day. The structure is constructed of SIPs (structurally insulated panels). The glass walls, window placement, large overhangs, sunshade and concrete floors are designed to take advantage of passive solar heating and cooling, while the masonry thermal mass heats and cools the home at night.

Ejecución de hoja exterior en cerramiento de fachada, de ladrillo cerámico cara vista perforado, color rojo, con junta de 1 cm de espesor, recibida con mortero de cemento blanco hidrófugo. Incluso parte proporcional de replanteo, nivelación y aplomado, mermas y roturas, enjarjes, elementos metálicos de conexión de las hojas y de soporte de la hoja exterior y anclaje al forjado u hoja interior, formación de dinteles, jambas y mochetas, ejecución de encuentros y puntos singulares y limpieza final de la fábrica ejecutada. Cobertura de tejas cerámicas mixta, color rojo, recibidas con mortero de cemento, directamente sobre la superficie regularizada, en cubierta inclinada.

The dormer on this house was originally constructed without any regard to the Architectural character of the home. We were hired to rebuild the dormer using period materials and trim details. Wood siding was replaced with Stucco, and we added horizontal band boards to match other trim details. We re-framed the roof to give the dormer a more substantial feel. This 3000 square foot residence, a classic New England Gambrel roofed house with amazing views of the Atlantic ocean, was completely renovated in a classical style. Built in 1907; it is one of the original houses in the town of Rockport.

The two modules connect seamlessly above the site built basement.
