The intent of renovating this beautiful Michigan lake home was to create an ‘East Coast Sea Captain’s Home’. The design called for adding 5,500 square feet to an existing 2,000 square foot home. “This project has 80 window and door openings in a part of the country that experiences punishing weather conditions,” said builder David Gruetzmacher. “The owners were able to watch the construction and make design changes as the home materialized. Quick window and door lead times, availability and delivery was crucial.”

This contemporary home has a number of copper roofs and low electrical impedance pathways, incorporated into the design of the home to provide lightning protection. Copper tops the 48" of stone that surrounds all four sides. It offsets the white trim abutting the roofs, windows, doors, and stonework. Copper not only seals out moisture for decades, but its contrasting color also accentuates the straight lines and craftsmanship of this KHE home. As the copper ages, it forms a thin barrier as noted by a blue-green patina. This layer protects the copper underneath from corrosion. All images by graphicus14.com

The coastal Anatoli House Plan offers a lot of unique architectural exterior detail. A standing-seam metal roof is lined with rafter tails. Dual front gables are lined with white braces on top of board and batten siding. A charming second-story balcony is a main feature with its double doors, white picket railing and chamfered columns.

Here's the weather face of the house. Looking directly out on the Pacific Ocean. Low maintenance finishes were the key: redwood with a semi transparent stain, ceramic tile wall cladding, and cast stone veneer. When installed by artisans the stone veneer was indistinguishable from a limestone wall and it was light weight - desirable in an earthquake zone. Ocean breezes in the summer & weathertight to the horizontal December rains - achieved with carefully detailed powder coated flashings. ©2014 felix day pretsch
