For centuries, the American chestnut was prized for its strong, straight-grained wood that was easy to saw and split. Highly resistant to decay, chestnuts were used in a variety of applications, from furniture and split-rail fences to chestnut hardwood flooring and telephone poles. Sadly, during the early to mid-1900s, this once vital hardwood timber tree was virtually destroyed in the eastern United States by an Asian bark fungus. One of the rarest of the reclaimed hardwoods, our wormy chestnut hardwood flooring – prominently marked with insect-bored wormholes – derives from roof rafters, floor joists and granary boards in old barns, houses and factories. The Kitchen features a large center island with plenty of seating. It was painted a dark brown pulling in the darker tones of the surrounding granite countertops and tile accents.

Our clients came to us with specific remodeling goals: to create a more functional mid-century home with an updated and larger kitchen, to resolve the public circulation through their master bedroom, have a unified feel versus a house with multiple additions, and expanded views of the lovely Huron River, which is right outside their backyard. Our solutions focused on creating a new circulation system that reconnects the entire floor plan into a cohesive whole, and reinforces the connection to the outdoor courtyards.

Kitchen Before & After The main level of this home contained an entryway, front living room, and a raised area with the kitchen, dining, and family room separated into three distinct rooms. This created a flow path that was confusing and difficult to navigate in with a wheelchair or walker, as there was no easy access to the most commonly used areas of the home. We removed all the walls that separated the kitchen from the rest of the main level to create an open floor plan and remodeled the Kitchen to include one run of cabinets along the wall with a large island that was 5ft away from the other cabinets, making this kitchen completely wheelchair accessible.

What was a small enclosed kitchen is now a large, open kitchen with plenty of space and lots of natural light.
