The challenge of this modern version of a 1920s shingle-style home was to recreate the classic look while avoiding the pitfalls of the original materials. The composite slate roof, cement fiberboard shake siding and color-clad windows contribute to the overall aesthetics. The mahogany entries are surrounded by stone, and the innovative soffit materials offer an earth-friendly alternative to wood. You’ll see great attention to detail throughout the home, including in the attic level board and batten walls, scenic overlook, mahogany railed staircase, paneled walls, bordered Brazilian Cherry floor and hideaway bookcase passage. The library features overhead bookshelves, expansive windows, a tile-faced fireplace, and exposed beam ceiling, all accessed via arch-top glass doors leading to the great room. The kitchen offers custom cabinetry, built-in appliances concealed behind furniture panels, and glass faced sideboards and buffet. All details embody the spirit of the craftspeople who established the standards by which homes are judged.

Once you step into the entrance at our Ruyteplaats project, you are immediately drawn towards the sprawling views across Hout Bay and the ocean below. Cheryl wanted this space to feel warm and inviting, pulling you in towards the areas that lie beyond, by designing bespoke items with lots of rich woods, texture and a colour palette of Neutrals, Deep Blue Jewel tones and rich Tans. The double volume entrance area called for bold light fittings in the form of 3 x Black pendants which hang at various heights, never detracting from the views ahead. A gorgeous, round, bespoke flower table with hand carved detailing on the base, holds hand blown glass vases with a colourful array of fresh flowers, which welcomes one and causes one to pause here and take a breath, before taking in the rest of the open plan space. Two bespoke custom designed consol tables flank the striking front door. Cheryl loves layering with textures to create depth, and the wall paper used on these walls have just the right amount of tactility to add more interest. Plants in wicker baskets gives life to any space, and the custom designed screen behind the plants seperate the Library from the Entrance Hall, giving the Library a bit of privacy but still allowing maximum light in this space. It’s all in the details, always and in all ways.

This Australian-inspired new construction was a successful collaboration between homeowner, architect, designer and builder. The home features a Henrybuilt kitchen, butler's pantry, private home office, guest suite, master suite, entry foyer with concealed entrances to the powder bathroom and coat closet, hidden play loft, and full front and back landscaping with swimming pool and pool house/ADU.

Spacious mudroom for the kids to kick off their muddy boots or snowy wet clothes. The 10' tall cabinets are reclaimed barn wood and have metal mesh to allow for air flow and drying of clothes.

Chartwell Barn: ebony stained wood front door The owner-designed, Chartwell Barn, is a self-build encapsulating elegance and contemporary living. We love the way the front door is framed by aluminium glazing above and to the side and opens into a galleried hall muted to tones of concrete grey and black. The front door (which is oversized with a pivot opening) is a mixture of designs – the Rondo V and the Lettera. The client was eager to match to the cladding as much as possible so instead of a black painted RAL door, he opted for a European Oak hardwood door stained with ebony oil. The letter etching and concealed handle complete the story creating a front door of dreams. A young family moving from NYC tackled a makeover of their young colonial revival home to make it feel more personal. The kitchen area was quite spacious but needed a facelift and a banquette for breakfast. Painted cabinetry matched to Benjamin Moore’s Light Pewter is balanced by Benjamin Moore Ocean Floor on the island. Mixed metals on the lighting by Allied Maker, faucets and hardware and custom tile by Pratt and Larson make the space feel organic and personal. Photos Adam Macchia. This well proportioned entrance hallway began with the black and white marble floor and the amazing chandelier. The table, artwork, additional lighting, fabrics art and flooring were all selected to create a striking and harmonious interior. The resulting welcome is stunning.

This entry foyer lacked personality and purpose. The simple travertine flooring and iron staircase railing provided a background to set the stage for the rest of the home. A colorful vintage oushak rug pulls the zesty orange from the patterned pillow and tulips. A greek key upholstered bench provides a much needed place to take off your shoes. The homeowners gathered all of the their favorite family photos and we created a focal point with mixed sizes of black and white photos. They can add to their collection over time as new memories are made.
