C2 | Studio Landscape Architecture

We hired C2 after purchasing a newly built home in Somerville, MA, which had a large, awkwardly sloped yard, sparse grass and lots of mature trees, some of which dead and a liability. C2 planned the remodel to suit our young family's needs, including leveling the yard, turning part of our asphalted driveway back into a garden, creating a deck extension, installing a shed and a new fence, building a vegetable patch, removing dead trees and replacing them with fast-growing birches so privacy is maintained, creating a path in large custom cement squares from the front to the back of the house, building a custom sand pit for the children and installing subtly lit wood steps and a slide into the remaining sloped side of the yard, and planting ground cover along the driveway. On top of all the functional elements, our brief to C2 was to give the generic suburban look of our home a more sophisticated, contemporary feel, while ensuring maintenance needs and costs were minimal and doable by ourselves, thanks to a fully automated concealed irrigation system. We also asked for all flowering plants to be white to match our home. Scott and Jane listened and understood exactly what we wanted. When completed, the work resulted in a gorgeous green space that we were able to enjoy immediately, but as they had promised, it took two years for the plantings to really mature and fully envelop our private oasis in the middle of the city. When it came time to sell our home we discovered that investing in the services of a landscape architect more than paid for itself. It gave our property a unique advantage on the market. Our "airy sanctuary", as one of the buyers called it, had a bidding war on the day of our first open house and sold to a cash buyer for more than asking price.

I first worked with Jane Choi and Scott Carman of C2 Studio in my capacity as Sales Director for a developer of a luxury high-rise condominium on the Boston waterfront. In order to help sell one of the homes, I needed a vision for the roof terrace, which was barren and desolate. Jane and Scott not only designed an incredibly beautiful and sustainable outdoor space, but they also provided stunning photo-realistic images of the design to excite the imagination of potential buyers. In fact, these images turned out to be instrumental to the eventual sale of that home. Not long after this experience, I worked with C2 on a more personal level. I purchased a Victorian home built in 1860, one of three on my street, all side by side and each with its own unique character. I did extensive work on the interior of my home to make it open and minimal, and it now looks like a beautiful art gallery with Italian furniture and a collection of contemporary and African Art. With creamy walls and understated furniture, it's very soothing to me. But when it came to my back yard, what existed was a hodge podge of bushes and trees placed around a small roundish bluestone patio off the kitchen, which I had no idea how to improve UNTIL I hired Jane and Scott. I told them I wanted privacy from my neighbors on one side that was open and exposed and a more contemporary feel to the space. No aspect of the remodeling of my home’s interior was as exciting as what they came up with for my garden area. They understood my aesthetic immediately, gave me a choice of 3 different plans, then a planting schedule for the front and back of my home. As a border around perimeter of the back yard, they planted 18 Hornbeam trees, which give me the privacy I wanted and a look of sophistication. They made all aspects of the work easy to implement and were as excited as I was about the project. I now have an outdoor space that is contemporary and well-ordered like my home, artistically filled with texture and color, so very peaceful and stunning. Working with Jane and Scott was a treat not just for their vast knowledge of plantings and trees, but because they think so differently about space, which is what makes a good designer truly great. And they are an absolute joy to work with!

C2 Studio has collaborated with Paul Lukez Architecture on a number of projects including the Jindu Sustainable Pavilion in Hangzhou, China.
