M.J. Whelan Construction

We definitely do not recommend MJ Whelan Construction, Milford Mi. for your next home remodel! Our experience with Whelan was difficult, frustrating and huge waste of our time and money. They lack integrity, transparency, communication and were extremely high priced. Their customer service is very poor, they do not listen to their customer and refused to provide detailed cost for our contract. We tried twice (2021 and 2025) to work with MJ Whelan for our home remodel which consisted of 3 additions: new first floor master suite, entertainment room with bathroom and front porch addition but ran into issues both times. We were unable to get to a signed contract. The first time in 2021, we provided prints but they came in with a price that was crazy high (thought maybe due to Covid) so we shopped around. We had some of the work done by another company then came back to Whelan (2025) to requote. After paying them $8400 for new "sketches" (not even CAD or construction prints) with minor changes to our original drawings, they actually tripled the price!! Unbelievable! We asked them to see what they could do to reduce the cost and all they did was take out content or lower product quality (windows, siding, cabinets, etc.). Ironically, the prices weren't reducing. It's like they played the shell game. They didn't listen or hear us. They did what they wanted. We would tell them what we wanted, then they'd come back with something different. And all this with no detailed costs to work with.We kept getting back total numbers and cost TBDs (cost to be determined)! We were so frustrated. We tried for 7 months only to end up with nothing. We decided to cut our losses $8400 and 7months and walked away.We thought, If it was this difficult to get a contract signed we didn't have any confidence or trust the building experience would be any better! Either MJWhelan got greedy due to covid or grew too fast and can't manage the business. Not sure, but we weren't willing to pay $700k-$1.4m without knowing exactly what we were paying for.

When we first met with M J Whelan we had an unfinished problem project on our hands. They took over and made our vision of a beautiful sunroom a reality. Honesty, reliability, fairness and integrity are a few words that describe our experience working with M J Whelan. This might seem a bit superlative, but it’s all true…the MJ Whelan team are all those things. We are so pleased with the overall quality we encouraged our daughter and son-in-law to hire M J Whelan to build their new home.

M.J. Whelan completed the cabinetry work for our small project and reinstalled our double oven. They were very respectful, they did excellent work and left the area perfectly clean. I could not be happier with how our project turned out. I would not hesitate to use this company again in the future when I have further renovations done at my home.

We met with Matt, got along well, gave him $2000 deposit. We gave specific info on our design - He gave us a design that they had used for another house in the area, just made it smaller for us - tried to pass it off as original and it was nothing like what we had described. Also over budget. He came back with another design that was way, way over budget. After that they got very busy - too busy to talk to us. After 2 months of no progress we terminated the relationship but he would not refund any of the money. Wasted a lot of time and money for nothing.

We are absolutely delighted with the kitchen that MJWhelan created for us, and equally importantly, we found them creative as designers and professional in their execution of the project. Greg J was our project manager, and under his management they kept to their completion time projection and stayed within budget. There was no concern or question that they did not address appropriately and promptly, and the team was accessible and available throughout the construction—I do not think that an email or phone call from one of us was not addressed within the hour. I could not recommend a builder more highly than I do MJWhelan.

Our experience with M.J. Whelan has been exceptional to say the least! We have found them to be a genuinely honest, innovative, and positive team who not only creates and carries out amazing designs, but does a fantastic job at incorporating our own personal style in every design. We have used them for two additions and a remodel, and will soon be contacting them again to remodel our kitchen! Each time their professionalism and positive energy made for a joyful experience! I would recommend M.J. Whelan 100 times over to anyone looking to build, renovate, or add on.

First off, I can't recommend MJ Whelan construction enough for any level of remodeling or renovation jobs. We recently used them to remodel the kitchen, bathroom and a large portion of the living area in our home and have been delighted with the both the process as well as the results. From the beginning I knew that we were working with someone who knows their business and takes genuine pride in their quality of the work. I wanted to use this company based on a friend's recommendation, however I got bids from other renovation contractors for our remodel just to be thorough. When compared with the other bids, I was very impressed with their pricing and the level of detail outlined in their bid. Both our kitchen and bathroom look INCREDIBLE!!! Both areas are so much more functional than they were before. We were absolutely delighted that the remodel stayed on schedule and within our budget. The remodel took the demolition of the kitchen, bathroom and part of the living space down to the studs and put it all back together again with new plumbing, electrical and heating. They provided us with numerous selections for our kitchen cabinetry also. All the work performed throughout the remodel is of the highest standard and we enjoyed working with Matt and his team. I also really appreciated how hard they all worked towards keeping the remodel on schedule and 'WITHIN OUR BUDGET'.

I called this company for a library design project based on the strong reviews I found in my research. Their representative came out promptly for a consultation-- which went very well. He seemed to get and be excited by the project-- custom shelving throughout the room and a coiffured ceiling to create a warm family reading room. He said he would be back with me on pricing and preliminary design ideas within a week. We spoke of timing-- how long would it take to do the actual project (he estimated 4-6 weeks) and what the schedule was like (doable within the end of this year). Well into the second week with no word from him-- I sent an email and called. He wrote back and said he was swamped and needed more time for pricing-- and by the way, the design dept was backed up too. Another week went by and he wrote stating that the design department was backed up over 4 weeks and "by the way" I would have to pay $750 for a design drawing. And he wanted to know if I still would like him to work on pricing? I politely declined-- with the feedback that 3 weeks later-- he was giving me information he should have at the time of the initial consultation: long delay in even getting an estimate, long delay in even getting a design, AND a nonrefundable $750 just to see what they would propose to do!!! For a set of custom shelves and ceiling work in a single average sized room. NO THANK YOU-- BAD information TOO LATE. Hope they still have customers after their current back log runs thin.....

Great team!! I can't say enough great things about them. Amazing quality. They take so much pride in their work and are so easy to work with. You ask, they will make it happen. Great communication. Top notch customer satisfaction. Best builder in Genesee/Livingston County hands down!

We couldn't have been happier with our experience with the whole MJ Whelan Construction team. From the start they were beyond accommodating to us and patient while we decided which direction we wanted to go. We thought they were very professional helping us along, and the entire crew were fun and hard working. We've gotten amazing comments from friends and family, and we're THRILLED with the results! I would and have recommended them to anyone looking for a job that I know will more than bring them exactly what they're looking for. I had heard great things about this company so when we were ready to do an addition, that included a complete kitchen remodel, we called them. Unfortunately after months of concept development and estimating they did something very unexpected and unprofessional. From day one we had told them we were looking at cabinetry other then the line they carry. They were fine with that until the day we were ready to give them a deposit and then they said they did not want to do the project unless we used their line of cabinets. What a waste of our time! I would be very cautious when dealing with this company. Very disappointed home owner

Entire house remodel-roofing, windows, siding, stonework, flooring, kitchen, bathroom, mudroom addition were all completed. This company has wonderful and insightful ideas. Staff is clean, respectful and punctual. Felt very comfortable leaving them in my home alone. Have told friends to utilize services too.
