When we were approaching construction, he helped us screen contractors, and we ended up with an outstanding construction team. He also continued to visit the site during construction to make certain the plans were followed accurately and to advise when adjustments were needed. A Costly Mistake – Stay Away! Crisp Architects may appear to be a reputable firm with a focus on historic homes, but my experience was a nightmare. They partnered with shady contractors, billed in an erratic and excessive manner, and completely failed to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy for a project where they were the lead agency. Their lack of follow-through and accountability forced me to hire a real estate attorney just to untangle the mess they left behind at the City of Rye Building Department. This firm operates without integrity, and I strongly advise others to look elsewhere.

Jimmy Crisp turned a lovely little one bedroom house into a magnificent two bedroom without changing the foot print. Complex project involved flipping the kitchen from the second floor to the first floor and surrounding it with a bank of windows to enjoy a spectacular river view. Cannot say enough good things about this brilliant architect.

Further, his team was extremely helpful and proactively involved in all the day-to-day items that come up during the course of construction, making small changes, suggestions, and adapting to whatever each week would bring that needed to be worked though. We appreciated in particular how inviting and adaptive they were for us to have any amount of involvement we wanted---I would have felt equally comfortable with Crisp "watching the store" as we built if we were out of the country than I was being as involved as I chose to be. Jimmy and his company have built quite the reputation for themselves as a company catering to high quality design and building, and in my opinion it is very easy to see why---they do what they say they will, when they say they will. Highly recommended for any top shelf project!

The old part of our house was built in 1770, the "modern" wing about 1860. When we decided to renovate, we wanted an architect that understood old New England houses and was used to working with them. With Crisp Architects we found the perfect answer. The work started with a mapping and measuring of the entire house, including the footprint and every room, down to very tight and accurate tolerances. This was very well done, as far as we know for the first time in the 240 year history of the house, and led to perfect blueprints that were a basis for Crisp's design and the subsequent outstanding work of the builder Arthur Deacon and Son. Without Crip's mapping and measuring we doubt that the results would have been as perfect as they now are. Jim Crisp and we communicated very well. He understood what we wanted and could relate that to the physical attributes and esthetics of our house and the surrounding historical community. Everything outside had to be approved by the Historical Commission, and Crisp was very helpful in gaining the approvals we needed, no doubt because he understood the thinking of persons like us who seek to keep the traditional exterior together with a modern, intelligent, user-friendly interior. We liked the design, and it has worked out beautifully. Throughout the project Jim Crisp and his colleague Darren Conrad were always available, always engaged, and we could not have been more pleased. The entire job turned out perfectly.

Our landscape design/build firm collaborated with Crisp Architects on a 3-year new construction project in Union Vale, NY. The 88-acre site presented many challenges, including siting the house on a steep hillside and integrating the structure with a pool and pool house and terraced gardens. From our very first meeting, I realized that Jimmy Crisp and his team are committed to their clients and are brilliant collaborators and problem-solvers. We are currently working on a Project with Crisp Architects out of Millbrook, New York. The Project is in Rye, NY and involves Interior Renovations on a house whose age varies from 200 years old to 5 years old. The Terrace part of the project involves an elaborate multi tiered Design with Concrete Retaining walls, Masonry, Lighting and many fixtures/appliances needing utilities. These Projects can be very difficult because of unknown existing conditions, which brings me to the rating that our firm gives to Crisp Architects. We encountered over and over again existing conditions that were surprising and a bit challenging. Crisp Architects were incredibly responsive and came up with resolutions that were practical and immediate. All throughout the job the ability of Crisp Architects to respond to issues was incredibly quick. Also, the manner in which Jimmy Crisp deals with issues has been handed down to his Project Managers. They handle things calmly and cooperatively. His firms works with both us and our Subcontractors to solve problems not blow them up. Of course it is always a pleasure building structures that are beautiful and Crisp Architects design beautiful structures with terrific detail. Although our opinion is not that important, it is great to build beautifully designed Millwork and Finishes. Our firm is hoping to complete this job in a most satisfactory way not only for the Client but even more so for Crisp Architects as we would love to do more work with them because it makes for an efficient, quick and beautiful product. We hired Crisp to do a sunroom renovation on our home. The book of their past work is beautiful, their communication and attention to detail A+ and James Crisp always made himself available to us. Sadly in the midst of the final drawings being issued we decided to put our home on the market as we will be moving out of state. Jimmy & team did a great job designing our modern farmhouse. They took our tearsheets and moodboards and translated everything into a classic house that fit perfectly into the footprint of our old house. They also helped us incorporate non-standard elements--a classic balustrade, a tin ceiling, a coffered ceiling--into the house in a timeless way. Finally, Jimmy helped design a house with public rooms that offer cozy gathering spaces in the winter and light & spacious connections to the outdoors in the summer.

We bought a house on a beautiful piece of property. However, the house was too small. We contacted James Crisp of Crisp Architects to discuss enlarging the house. He designed two additions, a Great Room and a Master Suite. He was not only very professional, but open to our wants and needs.We are so happy with our house and proud to call it home.

In 2006 our cottage was flooded and damaged beyond what I believed was repair. Crisp Architects designed a remodeled dwelling on the same foundation incorporating many positive updates including a beautiful porch overlooking a pond that sits on the property. The project was completed on time under budget for $150,000. Subsequently, Crisp architects was engaged to create a storage barn/heated workshop. One of the things that I particularly appreciated about this project was the radiant heat placed in the floor resulting in the ability to heat and use the shop year round with a propane gas heater. Crisp Architects has an unbelievable ability to create structures that are both beautiful and functional while fitting in seamlessly with the surrounding property. This project was also completed on time and under budget, a rare feat the days. I have since recommended Crisp architects to others, including my neighbor, all with positive results.

We hired Crisp Architects to design a guest house that would be sympathetic and complimentary to our antique Greek Revival style home. We were very impressed with how carefully Mr. Crisp listened to our thoughts and ideas, and extremely happy with the design he came up with. We couldn't be happier with the work done by Crisp Architects. Our house had a nondescript entryway that we wanted to improve. We asked Crisp Architects for a covered entryway that would signal "This is our front door." The design we received included a new foyer and front porch, with a room above (now our office, where I'm typing this) and a storage room in the basement. The new part of the house works perfectly with the old - a great improvement in how it looks from the outside as well as how it serves us on the inside.

Crisp designed and supervised construction of a two story addition. It helped us find a reliable contractor and other professionals like the engineer. Weekly on site visits to ensure work was up to spec. Helped with zoning, board of health and environmental conservation. Architect worked closely with us to understand our goals. Made suggestions but didn't push an agenda. Final result was above expectations. The addition is well integrated with original house and receives glowing compliments from neighbors and visitors.

Jimmy did all of the design work for the renovation of a 1790's New England farmhouse. He added a mudroom, laundry room, second living room, an enclosed porch (one of his specialties) and moved the stairs, which was a particularly puzzling piece of the renovation (at least for my wife and me). The results were sympathetic to the original design, but clean and modern at the same time. Jimmy is an extremely talented architect. He is a Southern gentleman and very easy to work with. The process went very smoothly thanks to Jimmy and an equally talented builder - Mike Shiels. The realtors who sold us the property were also impressed. Everything went according to plan with no unpleasant surprises and the project costed out as anticipated within a reasonable margin. My wife and I love the results and would recommend Crisp Architects enthusiastically and unreservedly.

Jimmy Crisp designed our 5-bedroom home in Dutchess County, New York, from the ground up over eight years ago. We couldn't be more pleased. In fact, we are now in the process of building a stone barn addition to the main house with him. Jimmy is a true expert in the traditional New England vernacular paying special attention to details that make a newly-buildt home feel like it's been there for over a century (minus the century-old plumbing!). I might add, that Jimmy and his team are extremely wonderful to work with. They listen closely and always respect the clients needs foremost.

Let me say first that I am the Facilities Manager for a historic trust, in northern Dutchess County, NY. I am responsible for 60+ building, which cyclically undergo renovation and repair. Over the years I have worked with many architects. Of all, Jimmy Crisp has been the best, most consistent problem solver; the most straight forward; unruffled no matter how unusual the situation. Always a complete gentleman, with the patience of a saint. Crisp Architects designed a beautiful guest house for us a few years ago. We have now started the process with them to design the main house and complete our home.

Jimmy Crisp was our immediate choice to renovate our recently purchased house in Millbrook. A 1920 center hall colonial with great "bones," the house needed a full overhaul in parts and careful, thoughtful re-detailing in others. Jimmy and his staff designed a beautiful new kitchen that embraces views of the surrounding countryside, and works for both day to day and entertaining purposes wonderfully. You should have heard the catering crew when they arrived for our Boxing Day party! With a brilliant stroke, Crisp Architects and contractor Lin Chamberlin opened up a two story front hall, so that it is now flooded with light and welcoming to our visitors. Our favorite go-to room in the winter, the small library off the front hall, was made warm and elegant with new panelling and bookcases, all laid out carefully by our favorite designers. As you drive up the driveway, you see the signature Crisp porch which now graces the front of the house and welcomes our guests. A perfect summer evening spot! Each step of this process was easy, we were given options and guided through decision making by a talented group of professionals, and any problems in delivery or installation were addressed quickly and with a minimum of fuss. This is a place we love to be, and our affection for our new home is enhanced by the memories of how we created it.

I worked with Jimmy Crisp for 24 months during 2004-2005 after he designed my home in Western Mass. This was the 5th home I had an architect design to build or remodel and Crisp Architects was by far the best group in this capacity that I employed. Both interior and exterior design and follow through was outstanding and exceeded my expectations. The work entailed a 7,000 sq ft home , a separate large carriage house with a separate 2nd floor guest apartment plus a separate freestanding pool house. I would and will continue to recommend Jimmy Crisp. If I was to build another home in the CT, MASS or NY State area I would definitely hire Jimmy Crisp.

Jimmy designed our house,from the ground up and he and Lin Chamberlin built it - we could not be happier. It was a wonderful and easy experience working with them, and the result is a great, comfortable and charming home. Jimmy and his staff were at all times helpful and responsive, and Lin and his crew were the same. The house was built on time, in spite of difficult conditions, (unseasonable ice, and cold) and is solid - warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and easy to live in. We hired Crisp Architects to renovate our farmhouse kitchen and to add a loggia. They were swift in their planning phase and their expertise was critical to meet the challenges of an old structure and to ensure that the integrity of the 1750's house was not compromised. The entire team is patient and professional and we would highly recommend them for any small or large project.

Working with Jimmy Crisp and his associates was a great and valuable learning experience that could not have turned out better than it did. Jimmy truly met, and in many instances, went beyond our expectations. The project, which was a complete gut renovation, went very smoothly and it did come in on budget with the exception of new items that were included after our original quote. Of course there were differences of opinions and long discussions about changes/desired outcomes and new costs, however, I would say that because of Jimmy's constant presence at the site, complete knowledge of exactly what was suppose to happen at all stages of the project and calm manner we escaped situations that could, at the time, have been less satisfactory. Jimmy, the associates and clerical employees of his firm are all a 10 in my book! My experience with Crisp Architects makes me believe that anyone seeking a great architect, backed by a most professional staff, could not do better than to choose Crisp Architects.
