Tim became an architect and a member of the AIA then founded Impluvium Architecture in the year 2000. Impluvium – a term from ancient Rome – is a courtyard with a water feature. Allowing living space to flow and interact between the indoors and outdoors is something that Tim has pursued not only in his professional experience but also through his extensive travels in Asia and Europe. Frequent extended visits to Europe have broadened his appreciation of traditional design developed over generations and how it can be applied in a contemporary context. This foundation has developed not just by visiting as a tourist, but by walking the ancient ruins, traditional villages, contemporary museums and various projects while living there for a few months of the year. Tim also has a number of modern projects as well including Impluvium's new home office. It's not just studying history first hand or experiencing modern buildings, however, Tim has discovered that projects must be inspired by the owner’s life and must also be informed by the context of the site for the project. Instead of presenting something to a client and convincing them that his concept is what they are trying to achieve, Tim draws out the design from the owner’s experiences and travels. This makes the process of design an interactive and educational experience for everyone involved in the project. Architecture is creating something that has meaning and can last. We absolutely loved working with Tim to design our dream home! From the moment me met with Tim, he knew exactly what we wanted and brought our vision to life. There were many aspects of our home we didn’t even know we wanted. Working with Tim was so easy and made the stressful process of designing a home seamless. Have been working with Tim and his partner Cesar on the master design for our weekend property in Solano for a couple of months now. Having a great time - they are thoughtful, patient, responsive, listen to our ideas, come back with creative suggestions, going beyond what we originally proposed. Appreciate the fact that Tim also helps with other activities - evaluating surveyors etc. Also like it that they are adjusting to our pace - rapid turnaroudn when we ask for it, patient when we are busy at work. We bought our home whose architect was Tim Haley. We have lived in our house for 7 years now and absolutely love it.it is a Mediterranean home which has been designed and built with so much thought and practicality. The home is not only beautiful but the functional aspects of the home are thought through in detail such as the great room instead of formal living dinning spaces, three islands in the kitchen , two dishwashers etc We get so many compliments whenever we have guests over to our home. I would love to have Tim design my home in Texas when I decided to move out of the Bay Area !

We met Tim via a personal referral as we were interviewing architects for our home expansion in Concord, CA. Upon our first meeting with Tim we knew he was the right fit for us and our project. Compared to the other architects we were interviewing it felt like Tim “heard” us and designed to our vision. Our vision had felt like a big, unsolvable puzzle to us and the way Tim put together our plans made sense. He very much was able to solve the puzzle in a way that we love. Our home is on a hill with beautiful views and also some limitations. We feel that Tim’s vision will maximize everything we love about our property. We love the way he opened up our main living area as well as his placement of several other rooms in our home to maximize the natural features of our home to make it GREAT! We also requested that Tim build for value. He suggested an ADU on our hillside to maximize value. We love our plans and will be very excited once we start the build out. Tim is an absolute pleasure to work with. He listens carefully, makes great suggestions and solved design issues to our taste. We are currently going back and forth with the city of Concord planning department as we are apparently pushing the limits on many fronts and being on a hillside poses a unique set of issues. We will continue to work with Tim to resolve these issues. We are thrilled and excited about our plans. Tim was able to see the vision and create like no one else had even suggested. We can't wait to bring this vision into reality! We will update our review once our project is underway / complete.

Our project is a 1,000 SF, two bedrooms, two bath luxury vacation rental property, to be built later this year at the rear of our residence. We required a very creative and unusual design that maximizes the use of the small space, hilltop views, and future income by utilizing configurable interior and exterior walls and convertible-use furnishings. As a semi-retired residential and commercial real estate developer, I have partnered with many architects, in my personal experience, Tim is most certainly the best of all of them. Tim & I became acquainted on one of his initial Impluvium projects and immediately I was impressed with the quality of his drawings (legibility, organization and completion) upon submittal to our structural engineering office [quality "backgrounds" create a foundation for quality plans]. Over the years, I've enjoyed receiving his plans...Tim creates usable interior spaces that blend effortlessly to exterior spaces and the environment beyond...each an individual expression built around the site and his client expectations. In our +30 years structurally designing custom estates for countless architects, we seen cookie-cutter "H", traditional stucco/tile McMansions with no character, bathrooms opening to dining rooms, etc. as well as struggled with incomplete or migrating architectural plans....all that does is damage the entire industry. Impluvium Architectural has always delivered quality unique work that is reflective of his clients needs and conscientious of the site potential.

I am a soil engineer and have been working on common projects with Tim for more that two decades. I have worked on many of Tim's projects and always impressed with his design and details. Tim designed the most challenging projects especially on hillsides. If I may mention on one of the very challenging steep upslope sites that one would think cutting into the hill at least for the driveway and garage with major retaining walls Tim came out with a spectacular design basically transforming the site in his design into a down slope avoiding all major excavation and construction of major retaining walls. I always had pleasure working with Tim and always impressed with the way he managed his projects from the early stages of the design until the completion of the project. Tim is highly recommended.

I could not agree more with the other reviews; all different but with a consistent theme: Tim is highly professional, talented, easy to work with, ego-less, and an indispensable part of the team. For us, that’s all very important, but not the clincher. We were referred to Tim by our Interior Designer after hearing about our frustrations with another “big city” architectural firm that approached our project like a job instead of a journey. With Tim, we have partner who approaches each project like his first; bringing an authentic sense of excitement and enthusiasm for us to achieve our “dream house.” Along the way, he has drawn on his extensive background and experience (he thinks like a builder) to offer creative ideas to make our plans more interesting, efficient, or better. His pragmatic approach allows him to both push our creative thinking but also pump the brakes when necessary. It’s exactly what we’ve needed. Tim listens, asks insightful questions, provides constructive feedback, then delivers. He has been instrumental in guiding all aspects of our major undertaking to complete a fantastic design that captures our vision – all at a very reasonable price. We met Tim shortly after purchasing our 8 acre hillside lot in Castro Valley – a property with stunning views yet challenging terrain. Tim’s vision of California indoor/outdoor living really spoke to us; his description of having special outdoor spaces melding with interiors was the main reason we contracted him as our architect. He has designed for us a magnificent 4500 square foot Mediterranean home complete with impluvium, loggias and a smoothly flowing floor plan that is custom tailored to our needs. The process working with Tim has been a real joy – he makes us feel as if we are junior architects and takes all of our feedback into account – either incorporating it into the design or explaining why it wouldn’t work. We started the process by meeting with Tim and giving him a run down of our lifestyle, our wants and wishes in the house, and most importantly, our budget. He was able to quickly turn around an intial design and from that point on, we worked together very closely to arrive at our completed design. He made us a part of the whole process and in the end we have a beautifully designed custom home. Tim is professional, creative and responds quickly to our inquiries and questions. His customer website makes it very easy to keep track of all documents and communication. He is very conscientious of cost, overall site plan, and most importantly customer needs. We can’t wait to see our dream home built and are excited to continue the journey with Tim.

Tim is an excellent architect and ultimately, a great business partner. He has a real gift for educating his clients on the essence of great design and has helped our family ease into our first major construction / design project here in Lafayette, CA. Tim is incredibly approachable and flexible in ultimately creating a design that works for his clients - and his pragmatic design sense has helped us find simple, yet optimal solutions for issues / options encountered hurdles during our design process. Tim has strong communication and people-skills. He was always willing to meet to review / answer questions and willing to share his both perspective expertise when confronted with new ideas. He never imposed his agenda on the project, and we never experienced ego that sometimes one might encounter with architects that come with pedigree such as Tim's. Tim designed our custom Pleasanton home in 2000, then worked to design an 2k+ sqft addition in 2008, and a guest home in 2018. We originally discovered Tim on the HOUZZ website. Searching for an architect experienced with Tuscan/Italianate design, we saw a house on HOUZZ that was stunning. The design belonged to Tim. It wasn’t typical, it was fun and thoughtful and while it was Italian design, he blended a California lifestyle to it that was just awesome. Did a big remodel project on my house a few years ago. Tim was our architect. I met 5 or 6 architects and chose Tim in the end as I felt an immediate connect. What I am most impressed was how easy it was to work with him. He easily got what I wanted when I sent him a few pictures and had a call. He worked with me through out the remodeling project guiding me even on aspects which are not directly architecture related. During the permit approval stage he readily came on conference calls with the city officials to get it approved. I am overall pleased with the remodel. Trustworthy. Talented. Understanding. These are few of the words that describes Tim. We embarked on a long journey in pursuit of building our dream home about a year ago. I had an idea of what I wanted but what Tim did was magical! He expanded on my ideas and turned it into a master piece! We had countless meetings and Tim made it always fun and productive. Tim is our architect. Recently we are building a dream house in Saratoga California. I would say Tim is not only an architect but also a great mentor that guided me to learn a lot about how to understand how the new house is to be built from the very beginning from our weekly meetings. I, and my husband met him in an open house which is he designed several years ago. At the time when we saw the house on market at Walnut Creek area in California, we were so impressed by the whole design of the house including all exterior and interior. So we decided to search who was the architect and we found that he was Tim Haley. Then my husband wrote a email to Tim saying that we wanted to meet him if he could come over to the house he designed. I remember that it was a very exciting meeting with Tim. He explained many details about the house he designed. After talking with Tim, we feel very lucky that we met a such experienced architect. Tim is very knowledgeable and patient at giving good suggestions. He let us to have our own ideas to put in the whole design of our floor plan and then he spent times little by little to discuss how better solutions would works. Since we have no experience in build a house, Tim also gave us a lot of good suggestions about how to interview contractors, how to talk to the city to get a good schedule slot and how to control our budget through the whole construction phase. He came across as a nice and honest person who did not try to push me into taking up his services. He designed us an amazingly beautiful house with our dream floorplan on a hillside. Tim has always been responsive and gets back to you quickly. He is really a down-to-earth guy and takes feedback and input seriously. His experience and deep knowledge of the construction industry will save you time and money. He also has a lot of experience with design review boards and town planners, which I would say is one of the most important things to consider when you hire an architect. My wife and I looked at a possible site to build our dream home and called Tim, amongst many architects, to get an initial view. Tim saw the site and after knowing our needs, gave us a fair idea on what we could build there before we even formally engaged. During the design process, Tim was our partner, guide and mentor and made us feel that we are designing the house and not him as if we are Jr Architect. We built a 8,000 sqft home on hill side lot. Tim's knowledge on structural, civil, sound proofing, lighting, interiors were instrumental in getting us what we wanted. His work was so thorough that we had no comments or clarifications from the building department which not only helped us expedite our building permit but also allowed us to get fair bids from the prospective builders as the specs were clearly laid out. Impluvium listened to my spiritual desires to create a contemporary space that made guests feel instantly welcome while providing function for everyday life. I described a desire that my home subliminally feel like a space where East meets West. Many visitors comment on how "happy", comfortable, and Zen like my home is. Mission accomplished thanks to Tim Haley! The project involved an extensive remodel of my 3 bedroom/2 bath townhouse inclusive of footprint expansions (addition of ~75 sq. ft.), relocation of all plumbing and electrical, removal of demising wall, new windows, doors and skylights, and creative solutions designed to maximize space. In particular, Impluvium not only designed an aesthetically beautiful ceiling in the great room, but it also provides layers of light for multiple uses at all times of the day and night, functionally it is a chase which delivers the in-home sound system and HVAC system, and it masks the new structural beam required when the demising wall was removed. The accuracy and completeness of Impluvium's design and architectural drawings were instrumental in expediting HOA approvals and permits.
