COMETA ARCHITECTS

Cometa Architects were tasked with the redesign of an old derelict 54m2 two-bedroom apartment built in 1936, in the centre of Barcelona. Our design brief was "a one-bedroom, open-plan layout apartment with a minimalistic kitchen positioned to take in the views of Las Arenas and Parc Joan Miro". The architects were then left to their own thoughts and ideas on how to design and configure the entire apartment. Guiding us through each step of the redevelopment, the architects Víctor Gonzalez and Faidra Matziaraki kept us informed at every stage of the project and would also offer a range of design solutions as the project developed. The end result was a modern bespoke apartment which captured the brick-arched timber structural ceiling which was exposed during the renovation and used as a focal point; a 'hydraulic' tiled floor using geometric shapes/patterns that gave the illusion the apartment was segregated; a 'light box' which divided the front and rear of the apartment, encapsulating a silhouette shower allowing the light to pass through the apartment; a bespoke low level kitchen which is positioned at an angle in the room to take in the views through both balcony windows and act as a focal point in the apartment; to carefully positioned mirrors which create a feel of more space. The simplistic but carefully thought and detailed design is an absolute joy to live in and every aspect of the apartment works well and the eye always leads you to some other feature time and time again. Only an architect could design such a relaxed and enjoyable space to live in.
