Project Overview:
(via Architectural Record) The four-story house was designed to fit into the compact site on the footprint of a pre-existing house that was razed because it was structurally unsound. Architect Robert Gurney designed the four-bedroom, three-bathroom house to appear to be two-stories when viewed from the street. At the rear, facing the Potomac River, the steep grade allowed the architect to add two additional floors below the main house with minimum intrusion into the wooded site. The house is anchored by two concrete end walls, extending the four-story height. Wood framed walls clad in charred Shou Sugi Ban connect the two concrete walls on the street side of the house while the rear elevation, facing southwest, is largely glass.

Streeter Custom Builder
Originally built in the 1930’s emerging from the International Style that made its way into Minneapolis thanks to visionary clients and a young architect, newly graduated from the University of Minnesota with a passion for the new “modern architecture” The current owners had purchased the home in 2001, immediately falling in love with style and appeal of living lakeside. As the family began to grow they found themselves running out of space and wanted to find a creative way to add some functional space while still not taking away from the original International Style of the home. They turned to the team of Streeter & Associates and Peterssen/Keller Architecture to transform the home into something that would function better for the growing family. The team went to work by adding a third story addition that would include a master suite, sitting room, closet, and master bathroom. While the main level received a smaller addition that would include a guest suite and bathroom.

Nestled along the shore of Lake Michigan lies this modern and sleek outdoor living focused home. The intentional design of the home allows for views of the lake from all levels. The black trimmed floor-to-ceiling windows and overhead doors are subdivided into horizontal panes of glass, further reinforcing the modern aesthetic.
The rear of the home overlooks the calm waters of the lake and showcases an outdoor lover’s dream. The rear elevation highlights several gathering areas including a covered patio, hot tub, lakeside seating, and a large campfire space for entertaining.
This modern-style home features crisp horizontal lines and outdoor spaces that playfully offset the natural surrounding. Stunning mixed materials and contemporary design elements elevate this three-story home. Dark horinizoal siding and natural stone veneer are set against black windows and a dark hip roof with metal accents.

We love designing in neighborhoods that have lots of mature trees. We loved this site because it benefits from having lots of green trees surrounding it, but because it is situated on a corner, it can open up to lots of natural light to the west and south, a great feature in the pacific northwest.
SHELTER Custom-Built Living
Modern exterior elements, such as large black windows and a nontraditional roof structure, flawlessly intermingle with a brick-slurry finish and flickering gas lanterns, which purposely connect the home to Charleston’s historical architecture. A
custom aluminum wall scrim not only adds privacy but an
architectural element, as its matte black louver panels mimic local plantation-style shutters on a grander scale.
