Our Client asked us to help them do 2 things. (1) Help them give their house a face lift (2) Build a home for their "Toys". This is a list of what we did: Replaced columns and add rails to their front porch, replaced metal roof over front porch, replaced roof shingles of the entire house, replaced dormer windows, repainted the entire exterior of home, built new driveway, designed and built carport. This house went from Drab to Fab pretty quickly.

On the second floor, structural advancement allows the “Corbusier Box to be less rigid. Here the “box” is broken further and instead of being a complete four-sided object, it has a missing side which is replaced by the Trespa façade that continues upward from the first floor. Photo: David Lena

Fu-Tung Cheng, CHENG Design • Front Exterior, Del Mar House Airstream trailers and Quonset huts inspired the design for this house docked against a gentle slope near San Diego. Cheng Design pits hard-edged industrial materials — concrete block, galvanized siding, steel columns, stainless steel cable and welded I-beams — against softer residential elements, such as stained-wood siding and a grid of exposed wood framing that supports the roof. Forces of weathering play a prominent role in determining the building palette and the decision to expose the structural system so plainly. The textured surface and color of the shingles closely resembles the bark of trees in the northern woods and the rich, warm tones of the exposed timber frame, its heartwood. The bronze of the weathering copper references the site’s numerous oaks. Wearing deepening patinas with each passing year, the house becomes more and more a part of the surrounding environment. This project has three components, which is all built differently. The main house is a waterfront property at the bottom of a steep cliff. All machine and materials are delivered by barge. Concrete is pumped from the top of the cliff down to the bottom with a 400ft line into a boom pump which was delivered by barge. Due to the challenging access to the site, most of the structural backfill is actually Styrofoam (EPS) backfill. The garage is built from the top of the cliff, with a 27ft tall foundation wall. We needed to excavate to solid bedrock in order to adequately anchor the foundation into the hillside. This tall foundation wall are 10″ thick with a double grid of rebar to retain approximately 350 cu yards of fill. Styrofoam backfill was also used. A funicular (tramway) is also being built on this project, which required it’s own building permit. Image by Ema Peter Photography
