A new open design from a dark and closed in space. The old U-shaped kitchen with two peninsula uppers is now an open, light and airy space complete with a new prep island and plenty of storage. The dramatic Cambria countertops and back-splash compliments the stained Alder cabinets. New recessed lighting along with the island pendant create a great work space.

The builder we partnered with for this beauty original wanted to use his cabinet person (who builds and finishes on site) but the clients advocated for manufactured cabinets - and we agree with them! These homeowners were just wonderful to work with and wanted materials that were a little more "out of the box" than the standard "white kitchen" you see popping up everywhere today - and their dog, who came along to every meeting, agreed to something with longevity, and a good warranty! The cabinets are from WW Woods, their Eclipse (Frameless, Full Access) line in the Aspen door style - a shaker with a little detail. The perimeter kitchen and scullery cabinets are a Poplar wood with their Seagull stain finish, and the kitchen island is a Maple wood with their Soft White paint finish. The space itself was a little small, and they loved the cabinetry material, so we even paneled their built in refrigeration units to make the kitchen feel a little bigger. And the open shelving in the scullery acts as the perfect go-to pantry, without having to go through a ton of doors - it's just behind the hood wall!

This renovation involved expanding the kitchen space into an adjacent office area, creating a side entry, new kitchen layout that worked well for two cooks, professional grade appliances, oversized island with seating on two sides, eat-in area, sitting area and furniture look cabinets with both stained and painted finishes. We enlarged an existing window by creating a boxed bay at the relocated sink and designed a continuous quartzite counter which serves as planting ledge for herbs and flowers. Some of the appliances were integrated into the cabinetry with panels, while others were designed as impact pieces. Custom designed cabinets include a large mantel style chimney hood with vent insert, furniture grade hutch with leaded glass doors, contrasting stained island with seating on two sides, bar with wine refrigerator and deep drawers, and a galley style butler's pantry which provides secondary prep space and ample storage. Details such as shaped cabinet feet, upper glass front cabinets, pull-out trash drawer, spice columns and hidden drawers and storage make this newly designed kitchen space feel luxurious and function perfectly. Traditional materials and forms meld seamlessly with industrial accents and modern amenities. Mixed metals are used in a balanced and dynamic way with warm gold tone cabinet hardware, stainless steel and chrome all working in harmony. Another item on the client’s wish list was a built-in doggie station for their two large dogs. This custom unit was designed with convenience in mind: a handy pot-filler was hard piped in for easy water bowl refills. The same glass backsplash tile and granite counter top were used to match the rest of the kitchen, and LED lights brighten the space the same way the undercabinet lights do. Rubber-bottomed dog bowls prevent any accidental spills, which are easy to clean up should they occur.
