When this family approached Gayler Design Build, they had a unique, octagon-shaped room that lacked flow and modern amenities. The home initially was constructed from three small houses that were "joined" together to create this unusual shape. It was important for the family to keep the open floor plan but add more functional space, to include new cabinetry and a large center island. In order to build the open floor plan, Gayler Design Build had to design around a central post and refinish the octagon concrete flooring, which was cut to reconfigure items in space and access sewer lines, etc.

A combination of curves and straight lines, oiled walnut and hand painted cupboards, have been used to achieve the overall effect. The base cupboards have been painted a slightly darker shade than those on the wall. The walnut island has a split level area which provides a large work station together with a sociable raised seating “bar” area. The work surfaces and sinks have been manufactured from Corian which gives a clean and seamless feel. An end grain walnut chopping board provides both contrast and a durable food preparation area. A pop up electrical socket in the island which is concealed when not in use, maintains the simple crisp, clean lines of the design. Recent renovation of an open plan kitchen and living area which included structural changes including a wall knockout and the installation of aluminium sliding doors. The Scandinavian style design consists of modern graphite kitchen cabinetry, an off-white quartz worktop, stainless steel cooker and a double Belfast sink on the rectangular island paired with brushed brass Caple taps to coordinate with the brushed brass pendant and wall lights. The living section of the space is light, layered and airy featuring various textures such as a sandstone wall behind the cream wood-burning stove, tongue and groove panelled wall, a bobble area rug, herringbone laminate floor and an antique tan leather chaise lounge.

This project was initially a main floor renovation – the kitchen was old and dated and the layout was poor for entertaining. Sounds simple enough, but it was only achieved by removing a trap door and the original external basement stairs and building a new side entrance to the lower level. From our first meeting I knew that the trap door was going to be the boss of the renovation – sometimes it’s the oddest things in a home that determine the course, size and scope of a project. We increased the size of the main floor by levelling of the back of the house; this increased the foot print in the kitchen and brought in much more natural light. Custom millwork and plaster mouldings were designed and installed in every room. Lighting was updated and new furniture and soft-furnishings were designed and sourced. On the second floor we renovated the master bedroom and the dressing room. In the basement we dug down, greatly improving the head height and formed a cozy media room and a lux laundry and mudroom. Beautifully understated, this kitchen was designed, supplied and installed by Saffron Interiors. The Belsay shaker doors in 'Cashmere' are fitted with a simple art-deco styled brass handle to offer a clean and timeless look. The Mistral resin worktops in 'Atacalma' allows for seamless joints throughout which offers a sleek, hygenic finish to the surfaces. The encaustic tiled splashback adds a touch of drama and colour to create interest on the rear walls.
