Newlyweds had just moved into their new home and immediately wanted to update their kitchen which is located in the center of the household, lacking any natural light source of its own. To make matters worse, the cabinets in place were dark red with black countertops. Not the picture of brightness they were looking for. To increase the amount of light reflected throughout the kitchen, we incorporated some of the following updates: 1. Replaced the solo ceiling light with 4 recessed cans 2. Updated the florescent undercabinet lights with new LED strips 3. Installed custom white cabinets topped with Silestone’s new Artic Ocean white countertops 4. Updated the dark glass pendants over the bar with larger, clear glass pendants that spoke more to the history of the home 5. Painted the walls a soft gray to compliment the palette The original kitchen layout was updated to eliminate the existing soffits and open the visual feel of the space. A large white farm sink now centers the natural wood bar area, inviting guests to sit and gather for ballgames and celebrations. This kitchen located in Rossmoor, designed by Jonathan Salmon, is a complete transformation from what it was before. The transitional kitchen design in Rossmoor, CA incorporates the warmth of wood Shaker style cabinetry with stainless steel appliances and Zephyr tempered glass and stainless range hood. This is offset by glass elements throughout the space. At the center of this great room is a glass raised eating counter on the peninsula that separates the kitchen from the dining/entertaining space and includes wood and chrome barstools for casual dining. The use of glass is echoed in the glass dining table and complemented by a glass mosaic tile backsplash. All of this is set against the backdrop of Wood-Mode Brookhaven cabinetry in a warm medium wood tone, topped by a Caesarstone Lagos blue countertop. The U-shaped kitchen includes base cabinets and upper cabinetry with glass front cabinets framing the range hood. Matching cabinetry extends to the dining/living area, including a beverage bar with a GE Monogram wine refrigerator. The beverage bar also incorporates a matching glass mosaic tile backsplash and glass front upper cabinets and is positioned just right to allow access to drinks away from the cooking area. The space is well-illuminated throughout with lights hand-picked to make every aspect of the design pop. This includes pendant lights, recessed lighting, and under- and in-cabinet lights. A Franke stainless, double bowl undermount sink pairs perfectly with the sleek lines of a Grohe faucet. Stainless accents are also found in the appliances, including a Kitchenaid oven and warming oven, Kitchenaid refrigerator and dishwasher, and the Dacor cooktop. It’s easy to imagine sharing a meal and a glass of wine with close friends and family in this Rossmoor kitchen design!

Beautiful striated granite countertops play off the warm tones of the maple clad kitchen. Slab door and drawer front paired with sleek glass subway tiles nod towards mid century modern influences. Glass light fixtures and gold finishes contrast the cool grey tones of the countertop. Desk space is crafted out of the end of the cabinet run for quick mail sorting.

This 1960s split-level home desperately needed a change - not bigger space, just better. We removed the walls between the kitchen, living, and dining rooms to create a large open concept space that still allows a clear definition of space, while offering sight lines between spaces and functions. Homeowners preferred an open U-shape kitchen rather than an island to keep kids out of the cooking area during meal-prep, while offering easy access to the refrigerator and pantry. Green glass tile, granite countertops, shaker cabinets, and rustic reclaimed wood accents highlight the unique character of the home and family. The mix of farmhouse, contemporary and industrial styles make this house their ideal home. Outside, new lap siding with white trim, and an accent of shake shingles under the gable. This recent remodel was a full gut down to the stubs and sub floors. The biggest challenge in the space was creating a single room from 2 separate areas. The original galley kitchen and a 1980’s add-on breakfast room. The breakfast room was cold and had old mechanicals emphasizing the need for a continuous space. The existing kitchen area was small, cramped and did not fit the lifestyle of the homeowners. The homeowners wanted a hidden pantry for large and seasonal items as well as for food storage. I planned for a portion of the garage to be transformed to a full size, walk-in, hidden pantry that catered to the needs of the family. Three of the most important design features include the hidden pantry, “other room” storage such as the mudroom seat and window bench, as well as the eat-in counter. Other notable design elements include glass cabinets, under-cabinet lighting, a message center and built-in under the counter appliances. The coffee system is plumbed allowing for immediate hot coffee and specialty drinks at the touch of a button. Dimensions: 27’X12’ Cabinetry: KEMPER Flooring: MAPLE HARDWOOD with Radiant floor heat.
