What this Mid-century modern home originally lacked in kitchen appeal it made up for in overall style and unique architectural home appeal. That appeal which reflects back to the turn of the century modernism movement was the driving force for this sleek yet simplistic kitchen design and remodel. Located in Rye on the Mornington Peninsula this addition helps to create a family home from the original 1960’s weekender. Although in good condition the late modernist home lacked the living spaces and good connections to the garden that the family required. The owners were very keen to honour and respect the original dwelling. Minimising change where possible especially to the finely crafted timber ceiling and dress timber windows typical of the period. The addition is located on a corner of the original house, east facing windows to the existing living spaces become west facing glazing to the additions. A new entry is located at the junction of old and new creating direct access from front to back.

This former garment factory in Bethnal Green had previously been used as a commercial office before being converted into a large open plan live/work unit nearly ten years ago. The challenge: how to retain an open plan arrangement whilst creating defined spaces and adding a second bedroom. By opening up the enclosed stairwell and incorporating the vertical circulation into the central atrium, we were able to add space, light and volume to the main living areas. Glazing is used throughout to bring natural light deeper into the floor plan, with obscured glass panels creating privacy for the fully refurbished bathrooms and bedrooms. The glazed atrium visually connects both floors whilst separating public and private spaces. The industrial aesthetic of the original building has been preserved with a bespoke stainless steel kitchen, open metal staircase and exposed steel columns, complemented by the new metal-framed atrium glazing, and poured concrete resin floor. Overview Whole house refurbishment, space planning and daylight exercise. The Brief To reorganise the internal arrangement throughout the client’s new home, create a large, open plan kitchen and living space off the garden while proposing a unique relationship to the garden which is at the lower level. Our Solution Working with a brilliant, forward-thinking client who knows what they like is always a real pleasure. This project enhances the original features of the house while adding a warm, simple timber cube to the rear. The timber is now silver grey in colour and ageing gracefully, the glass is neat and simple with our signature garden oriel window the main feature. The modern oriel window is a very useful tool that we often consider as it gives the client a different place to sit, relax and enjoy the new spaces and garden. If the house has a lower garden level it’s even better. The project has a great kitchen, very much of the moment in terms of colour and materials, the client really committed to the look and aesthetic. Again we left in some structure and wrapped the kitchen around it working WITH the project constraints rather than resisting them. Our view is, you pay a lot for your steelwork… Show it off!

Modern contemporary kitchen in a 100 year old stone cottage. Concrete counters, snow tire chain pot hanging rack, antique butcher block, stainless steel cabinets. This 120 year old one room stone cabin features real rock walls and fireplace in a simple rectangle with real handscraped exposed beams. Old concrete floor, from who knows when? The stainless steel kitchen is new, everything is under counter, there are no upper cabinets at all. Antique butcher block sits on stainless steel cabinet, and an old tire chain found on the old farm is the hanger for the cooking utensils. Concrete counters and sink. Designed by Maraya Interior Design for their best friend, Paul Hendershot, landscape designer.
