AFTER: Taken from the living room and looking through where the counter-to-ceiling wall used to separate the kitchen and living room. A large granite counter with a 48" round "table" at the end now replaces the tiny eating area, comfortably seating 4. The table part of the counter is supported by a re-purposed, intricately carved wood table base originally topped by a glass table top. The desk area at the left side of the back wall was demolished and the back counter and cabinets now extend all the way to the window wall, allowing for more kitchen storage. The laminate cabinets were replaced with glazed wood cabinets. The floors (previously tile and carpet) throughout this level of the home were replaced with hand-scraped Acacia wood.

The surprise in the kitchen is the two-toned effect. Unless you are standing in the kitchen, you don't notice the elegant base cabinetry on the peninsula that has been finished in a blue-green color. This creates more character and another element to increase the "high-end" feel in this affordable upgrade. The kitchen in this contemporary style home seemed to be an afterthought. While the rest of the house is open and expansive, the kitchen was small and detached, especially for a couple who loves to entertain. The very large and adjacent dining room seemed a more likely location for a kitchen, but they resisted the thought of swapping the two spaces. So their designer created a layout that allowed for a second – and larger – opening to the dining room and the expansive, light-filled living space beyond. A peninsula attaches to the wall that remained between the two openings. There the sink is located so that during food preparation or cleanup there is a view through the windows and the opportunity to socialize with people gathered at the countertop. The seating area is curved to encourage people to gather and chat. The granite countertop choice was a case of love at first sight for this homeowner since it brought his favorite shade of blue into the kitchen. The cooking center is spread out along the wall at the back of the house. There the eye-catching stainless steel hood creates a focal point above the sleek, low-profile cooktop. Glass tile pulls color from the countertops onto the wall where it glimmers in the light. One oven combined with a microwave/convection oven meet their cooking needs and the stainless steel adds brightness to the room. The stainless steel refrigerator is just a few steps away from the work center and the seating area and is easily accessible from other parts of the house. The original kitchen featured only one small window in addition to the sliding glass doors. Since it was almost new and the house had been resided, a second window was joined to the first, and cabinetry beneath them anchors them in the space. A tall pantry cabinet completes the kitchen, providing high quality storage and visual balance in this redesign. Sleek cherry cabinets give this kitchen a decidedly contemporary style. They were stained just enough to add warmth and color and are enhanced with oversized stainless steel pulls. From this redesigned space you can see into the main house and see out through the many windows there. When combined with a new layout that provides better traffic flow, there’s a new feeling of spaciousness to the kitchen. It’s no longer an afterthought. It’s an integral part of this home’s living space, enhancing the home and the lifestyle of its owners. Photography By Scott Sherman

This transitional style enclosed kitchen design is a bright, airy kitchen with light gray, shaker style Crystal Cabinetry kitchen cabinets, accented by Top Knobs hardware and an engineered quartz countertop. The sleek, neutral kitchen is set against the backdrop of an eye-catching Alyse Edwards Half-Baked Tile in "Teal the Timer Rings". The blue backsplash makes this kitchen design pop, but still provides a classic look combined with the hardwood floor and stainless sink and appliances.

In this kitchen Waypoint Living Spaces cabinet in 660R door style maple wood in painted hazelnut was installed. Pepercorn white quartz countertops and quartz composite sink.

A Galley Kitchen redo. Had to work with the existing Saltillo Tile floors but cooled down the over all effect with Grey Cabinets and a Blue Glass Backsplash. Stainless Steel Appliances and Black Accent Pendants made the room much more Transitional in appearance.

This kitchen renovation took a very small kitchen and opened it up for better flow and to accommodate an island. Cherry lower cabinets and white uppers add contrast. The Red Dragon granite has small blueish specs and black veining which ties in nicely with the glass backsplash color.
