Clawson Architects designed the Main Entry/Stair Hall, flooding the space with natural light on both the first and second floors while enhancing views and circulation with more thoughtful space allocations and period details. The AIA Gold Medal Winner, this design was not a Renovation or Restoration but a Re envisioned Design. A young family with two small children was willing to renovate in order to create an open, livable home, conducive to seeing everywhere and being together. Their kitchen was isolated so was key to project’s success, as it is the central axis of the first level. Pineapple House decided to make it, literally, the “heart of the home.” We started at the front of the home and removed one of the two staircases, plus the existing powder room and pantry. In the space gained after removing the stairwell, pantry and powder room, we were able to reconfigure the entry. We created a new central hall, which was flanked by a new pantry and new powder room. This created symmetry, added a view and allowed natural light from the foyer to telegraph into the kitchen. We change the front door swing to enhance the view and the traffic flow upon entry into the house. Simple built-in benches with cabinets above provide a place to stash the dog leashes, and sunscreen in this back entry mudroom area. The powder room features a wallpaper accent behind the sink, and minimalist wall sconces.

A simple but highly sophisticated entry welcomes guests to a well appointed home. The entry table with metal base and wood top grounds the framed round mirror. Stairway runner allow the beautiful hardwood treads to add elegance to the space. Photography by Peter Rymwid.

This entry was the darkest part of the house. Originally this area had a big coat closet an 7'ft narrow double french doors into the living room. Removing the french doors & moving the closet ,expanding the height and the width of the entry to the living room and the use of the yellow lacquer ceiling and custom wall covering changed this area dramatically. The furniture and art is an eclectic mix. 100 century castle chairs & trestle table along with Andy Warhol & Bianca Jagger vintage rare photographs make a wonderful combination. This area was the owners least favorite space in the apartment and when it was completed went to their favorite!

Our design team listened carefully to our clients' wish list. They had a vision of a cozy rustic mountain cabin type master suite retreat. The rustic beams and hardwood floors complement the neutral tones of the walls and trim. Walking into the new primary bathroom gives the same calmness with the colors and materials used in the design.
