New white quartz counters, a beveled subway tile backslpash with just a hint of gray grout & white floating shelves really updated this kitchen while still helping it retain the overall transitional feel of the house. A new rectangular metal pendant over the isalnd further elevated the space.

We added on three feet to the back of this house to get a little more living space. We also knocked out a wall between the kitchen and living room to create this great room feel. We wanted this room to be monochromatic with pops of blue and silver. My favorite part of this space is the raised bar seating at the end of the island. We had to get creative but now my clients kids can sit and talk to them while they are making dinner.

The goal of this renovation was to create balance without mirror symmetry. Designing with the Golden Rectangle based on the Fibonacci numbers, where the width is 62% of its height is the pleasing proportion that all objects in the universe, including the DNA module, are based. The cabinets or their combinations in this composition are either golden rectangles or squares. Their specific size and placement creates the focal point above the open shelf which is confirmed by the crossing of the diagonal lines. Based on our perception and use of the golden proportion, the sink backsplash is 7” of granite, 11” painted. Similarly, the same dimensions as a stair riser and tread. In a high ceiling making only one cabinet taller and deeper alludes to the space without being overwhelming. Form is in the cherry cabinets and granite counter tops. Function includes the dog bowl.

The original kitchen in this 1960s ranch home was considerably smaller and separated from the rest of the home by a wall with a small opening. The wall also blocked the view to the original fireplace and built-in bookcase/desk (on the right - the left side was added as part of the remodel). By removing the wall, we were able to expand the kitchen while showcasing the fireplace. The new style of the kitchen has both modern and Craftsman elements - marrying the 60s ranch architecture of the home and the Arts and Crafts furniture and decorations of the homeowners. This transitional style kitchen has a 3-level island which provides seating, additional storage and breaks up the large scale of the island. With the open plan, the 2 large appliance garages help supplement wall cabinet storage and help block the view of the sink in this multi-level island. Cherry cabinets, honed granite, slate backsplash and Kenya Reed Lumicore door inserts add texture and pattern. The large circular pulls are custom but the remainder are stock pulls.

This 6,500 sf home is located on a narrow parcel of land overlooking the Long Island Sound. The architectural vernacular for the home is influenced by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as the craftsman homes of Greene & Greene. “A life spent focused on the outdoors” was the dream envisioned for this site by the client. The home addresses that vision through its organization. The plan focuses its attention towards three exterior terraces, each with unique vistas and solar exposures. By creating exterior living spaces and situating large expanses of glass towards them, light penetrates deeply into the home, and views of the landscape become the backdrop of the client’s daily life. The project consists of the main house and guest/garage wing. By juxtaposing the two forms, a slate-covered courtyard was formed in between, which acts as a welcoming entry for visitors.

This classic 1970's rambler was purchased by our clients as their 'forever' retirement home and as a gathering place for their large, extended family. Situated on a large, verdant lot, the house was burdened with extremely dated finishes and poorly conceived spaces. These flaws were more than offset by the overwhelming advantages of a single level plan and spectacular sunset views. Weighing their options, our clients executed their purchase fully intending to hire us to immediately remodel this structure for them. Our first task was to open up this plan and give the house a fresh, contemporary look that emphasizes views toward Lake Washington and the Olympic Mountains in the distance. Our initial response was to recreate our favorite Great Room plan. This started with the elimination of a large, masonry fireplace awkwardly located in the middle of the plan and to then tear out all the walls. We then flipped the Kitchen and Dining Room and inserted a walk-in pantry between the Garage and new Kitchen location. While our clients' initial intention was to execute a simple Kitchen remodel, the project scope grew during the design phase. We convinced them that the original ill-conceived entry needed a make-over as well as both bathrooms on the main level. Now, instead of an entry sequence that looks like an afterthought, there is a formal court on axis with an entry art wall that arrests views before moving into the heart of the plan. The master suite was updated by sliding the wall between the bedroom and Great Room into the family area and then placing closets along this wall - in essence, using these closets as an acoustical buffer between the Master Suite and the Great Room. Moving these closets then freed up space for a 5-piece master bath, a more efficient hall bath and a stacking washer/dryer in a closet at the top of the stairs.
