  Free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   This project started out as a kitchen remodel but ended up as so much more. As the original plan started to take shape, some water damage provided the impetus to remodel a small upstairs hall bath. Once this bath was complete, the homeowners enjoyed the result so much that they decided to set aside the kitchen and complete a large master bath remodel. Once that was completed, we started planning for the kitchen! The original kitchen was just large enough to accommodate an island and a separate pantry but felt a little cramped, especially during the weekends when the couple likes to entertain. The primary goal was to maintain the functionality of the current space, but to add some breathing room as well as to provide a view to the homeowner’s side yard and substantial Hosta garden. The solution was to bump out the space about 10 feet which provided ample room for large pro appliances, a large island for gathering and an upgraded pantry space. It was important to the homeowners to create a space that felt like it belonged in their historic 1866 home. Details such as matching new trim to the existing large custom profiles in the original home and re-purposing an existing door to be used for the new pantry, provided these touches. A large window at the main sink provides that view into the yard and a beautiful focal point for the room. A mix of painted wood and stained cabinetry gives the new kitchen a sense of belonging in the older home, as do the Super White quartzite that has the look of marble, subway tile backsplash, polished nickel lanterns and glass and mirrored doors. The large pantry, filled with custom shelving built to the homeowner’s specifications, stainless steel appliances and the two Galley Workstations – sinks that do double duty as prep space – ensure that not only does the kitchen look great, but also functions in a personalized manner that works perfectly for the occupants. Doing the bump out also allowed the opportunity for a small mudroom and powder room right off the kitchen as well as re-arranging some openings to allow for better traffic flow throughout the entire first floor. The result is a comfortable up-to-date home that feels both steeped in history yet allows for today’s style of living. Major renovation to a beautiful old Victorian outside of Boston. We opened up the kitchen to expose the original pantry, restored the old wood cabinets and painted the interiors a beautiful shade of navy blue. Exposed brick and added on a much needed mudroom and new entry to the kitchen, we were able to expose the back stair case and added batten and board on the walls. Beautiful.

David Reeve Architectural Photography; The Village of Chevy Chase is an eclectic mix of early-20th century homes, set within a heavily-treed romantic landscape. The Zantzinger Residence reflects the spirit of the period: it is a center-hall dwelling, but not quite symmetrical, and is covered with large-scale siding and heavy roof overhangs. The delicately-columned front porch sports a Chippendale railing. The family needed to update the home to meet its needs: new gathering spaces, an enlarged kitchen, and a Master Bedroom suite. The solution includes a two story addition to one side, balancing an existing addition on the other. To the rear, a new one story addition with one continuous roof shelters an outdoor porch and the kitchen. The kitchen itself is wrapped in glass on three sides, and is centered upon a counter-height table, used for both food preparation and eating. For daily living and entertaining, it has become an important center to the house.

A charming 1920s colonial had a dated dark kitchen that was not in keeping with the historic charm of the home. The owners, who adored British design, wanted a kitchen that was spacious and storage friendly, with the feel of a classic English kitchen. Designer Sarah Robertson of Studio Dearborn helped her client, while architect Greg Lewis redesigned the home to accommodate a larger kitchen, new primary bath, mudroom, and butlers pantry. The transformation of this 1929 home in Claremont is absolutely flawless. Bringing the coastal colors into a colonial revival style provides a soothing, and yet stunningly contrasted space. Navy blue shaker cabinets along the bottom of the kitchen, and hutch space, topped with white shaker upper cabinets in the kitchen space, and a combination of shaker, and glass front cabinets on the hutch cabinets. A few features of the cabinets include a super Susan, a lazy Susan, a pantry with full roll outs, a set of floating shelves, and a small wine cabinet style end cap. Gold hardware on the doors and drawers match the new gold faucet made by Newport Brass. The sink is an apron front cast iron sink from Kohler. The countertops are made of pure Carrara, honed marble, which accents the colors throughout the area, and brings a touch of nature in. For the backsplash, tiled up the entire wall, we used a 3x6 hexagon shaped white tile. In the hutch area as an accent we chose a 3x6 tile in a brick pattern. Both spaces we used white brick contrasted with a dark gray grout. A major change for these home owners was the removal of a wall that only had a doorway in it between the spaces. Removing that wall, bringing the curved corners into play to match the ceiling and the shape of the existing doorways in the home, created an open concept in what was a segregated location. By putting the microwave in the hutch area just outside the kitchen allowed for a continuation space to make that area feel like part of the kitchen instead of a separate dining room. We also added a built in bench, with shiplap up the walls for a custom seating area, painted stark black as yet another accent. The new casement window over the sink with custom moleans is also that deep black to match the new dinette bench and the other windows in this historical home. Last but not least was a touch up of the laundry area off the kitchen. Instead of bringing in more of the classic hardwood floor we chose to accent the space yet again with a beautiful fabric feel patterned tile floor. Such a perfect way to end a beautiful space.
