The overall design of this kitchen is very traditional and encompasses an open family-friendly kitchen with plenty of seating around the peninsula to entertain. The warm tones and travertine backsplash of this kitchen create an inviting atmosphere with a cozy feel.

DIY Kitchen Splash project is fun and interesting. Client wanted to update their galley-style kitchen and chose to update with new countertops and backsplash. Furthermore, the choice of new granite with greys, blacks, and hints of green tones exquisitely marbled throughout the countertop is stunning. In addition, the client needed backsplash to enhance the colors in their granite. Working with a French Creek Kitchen Designer they found the right sample. Similarly, this glass and stone mix pulled together the tones from the granite and beautifully enhances their oak cabinets. This European kitchen has several different areas and functions. Each area has its own specific details but are tied together with distinctive farmhouse feel, created by combining medium wood and white cabinetry, different styles of cabinetry, mixed metals, warm, earth toned tile floors, blue granite countertops and a subtle blue and white backsplash. The hand-hammered copper counter on the peninsula ties in with the hammered copper farmhouse sink. The blue azul granite countertops have a deep layer of texture and beautifully play off the blue and white Italian tile backsplash and accent wall. The high gloss black hood was custom-made and has chrome banding. The French Lacanche stove has soft gold controls. This kitchen also has radiant heat under its earth toned limestone floors. A special feature of this kitchen is the wood burning stove. Part of the original 1904 house, we repainted it and set it on a platform. We made the platform a cohesive part of the space defining wall by using a herringbone pattern trim, fluted porcelain tile and crown moulding with roping. The office area’s built in desk and cabinets provide a convenient work and storage space. Topping the room off is a coffered ceiling. In this classic English Tudor home located in Penn Valley, PA, we renovated the kitchen, mudroom, deck, patio, and the exterior walkways and driveway. The European kitchen features high end finishes and appliances, and heated floors for year-round comfort! The outdoor areas are spacious and inviting. The open trellis over the hot tub provides just the right amount of shelter. These clients were referred to us by their architect, and we had a great time working with them to mix classic European styles in with contemporary, current spaces. A Modern Mission The challenge in this Ottawa South home was to update a turn-of-the-century home’s kitchen, preserving the Arts and Craft styling while providing the modern conveniences required by today’s lifestyles. The classic lines and warm colours combine to create a functional and inviting space. The upper cabinets do double duty, offering long-term storage space as well as providing extra lighting. A salvaged antique door with sandblasted glass replaced an inappropriate modern door. A custom cherry heat grill was crafted and stained to match for the stool side of the peninsula. With careful attention to detail, the painted and damaged mouldings in the dining & kitchen area were replaced with new ones that were finished with stain & amber shellac to help them blend seamlessly with the old ones. It contains no harmful chemicals and do not emit harmful radiation or gasses. Granite is heat resistant and is one of the most heat-resistant countertops on the market. You can place a hot pan out of the oven directly onto the countertop surface. Experts do recommend the use of a trivet when using appliances that emit heat for long periods of time, such as crockpots. Since the material is so dense, there is a small possibility heating one area of the top and not the entire thing, could cause the countertop to crack. Granite is scratch resistant. You can cut on it, but it will dull your knives! Granite scores a seven on Moh’s hardness scale. Granite countertops are considered to be a low maintenance countertop surface. The likelihood of needing to be repaired or resurfaced is low. Granite is a porous material. Most fabricators will apply a sealer to granite countertops before they are installed which will protect them from absorbing liquids too quickly. Many sealers last more than 10 years before needing to be reapplied. When they do need to be reapplied, it is something that most homeowners can do on their own as the process is similar to cleaning. Darker granites are very dense and sometimes don’t even require a sealer. When it comes to pricing, there are a lot of variables such as edge profile, total square footage, backsplash, etc. Don’t be fooled by the stereotype that all granite is expensive. Lower-range granites will cost less than high-range laminate. Though granite countertops are not considered “low range” in pricing, there are a lot of affordable options. If you are looking for something truly unique, consider an exotic granite. Some quarries are not easily accessible and/or only able to be quarried for short periods of time throughout the year. If these circumstances exist in a quarry with gorgeous stone, the price will be driven upward. You won’t find a lot of solid patterns or bright colors, but both do exist. Also, watch for a large range of color and pattern within the same color of stone. It’s always a good idea to view the exact slab(s) that will be fabricated for your kitchen to make sure they are what you expected to see from the sample. Another factor is that many exotic types of granite have huge flowing waves, and a small sample will not be an accurate representation of the whole slab. Granite countertops are very resistant to chemicals. Acids and bases will not harm the material.

Located in historic East Aurora, this stunning 7,500 SF residence was designed to be reflective of the timeless aesthetic of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The owners sought the talents of Heather DeMoras Design Consultants to coordinate all aspects of the interior. The result is a celebration of the Arts and Crafts style with a spirited modern twist.

The Commandants House in Charlestown Navy Yard. I was asked to design the kitchen for this historic house in Boston. My inspiration was a family style kitchen that was youthful and had a nod to it's historic past. The combination of wormy cherry wood custom cabinets, and painted white inset cabinets works well with the existing black and white floor. The island was a one of kind that I designed to be functional with a wooden butcher block and compost spot for prep, the other half a durable honed black granite. This island really works in this busy city kitchen.
