A unique blend of visual, textural and practical design has come together to create this bright and enjoyable Clonfarf kitchen. Working with the owners interior designer, Anita Mitchell, we decided to take inspiration from the spectacular view and make it a key feature of the design using a variety of finishes and textures to add visual interest to the space and work with the natural light. This room, formally a dining room was opened up to the great room and turned into a new kitchen. The entertainment style kitchen comes with a lot of custom detailing. The island is designed to look like a modern piece of furniture. The St. Laurent marble top is set down into a mahogany wood for a furniture-like feel. A custom server is between the kitchen and great room. The server mimics the island design with the mahogany and marble. We incorporated two lamps in the server to enhance its furniture-like feel. Double height ceiling over the kitchen area bring in daylight that spills through the open plan space. A sitting area or conservatory looks out to a garden and pool through floor to ceiling steel windows. Wood siding of the exterior wraps into the house at the south end of the kitchen concealing a pantry and panel-ready column, FIsher&Paykel refrigerator and freezer as well as a coffee bar. An assemblage of textures and raw materials including a dark-hued, minimalist layout for the kitchen opens to living room with panoramic views of the canyon to the left and the street on the right. We dropped the kitchen ceiling to be lower than the living room by 24 inches. There is a roof garden of meadow grasses and agave above the kitchen which thermally insulates cooling the kitchen space. Soapstone counter top, backsplash and shelf/window sill, Brizo faucet with Farrow & Ball "Pitch Black" painted cabinets complete the edges. The smooth stucco of the exterior walls and roof overhang wraps inside to the ceiling passing the wide screen windows facing the street. An American black walnut island with Fyrn counter stools separate the kitchen and living room over a floor of black, irregular-shaped flagstone. Delta Light fixtures were used throughout for their discreet beauty yet highly functional settings.

A kitchen of contrasts. Superwhite granite is teamed with dark cabinetry as the focal point at the front and on splashback, then white cabinetry with Silestone Statuario stone at the rear.

Goals for the kitchen: Create a statement. The island is adorned with Bently quartz from Cambria. It steered each selection of the kitchen from the black chevron backlash to the gold bamboo-look pendants. The appliances coordinate with the black and gold finishes as well, the JennAir range’s is dressed in brass bezel accents and the stainless-steel apron-front sink is brushed with a brass decorative front.

When our client moved into a new home in East Sheen, they were downsizing from their previous house but still wanted the kitchen and living areas to have the wow factor. We created an open-plan kitchen with a large island and separate bar area, so they could still have an excellent entertaining space while preserving the smaller footprint of their new home. After seeing it on our display, they fell in love with the Caesarstone Empira Black quartz worktops. This became the starting point for our design, which centres around a dark, dramatic colour palette with small yet surprising pops of colour. We used Pronorm Y-line Stratus Grey Pearl and Pebble Grey cabinets to complement the worktops. These units house the Neff ovens, a The 1810 Company sink, an a Quooker Fusion hot tap, a coffee zone, and an American fridge freezer with larder storage along the back wall, dropping down to a long worktop space for washing. The island sits next to the structural pillar, with a Neff venting hob and Spekva Safari Brasilica solid wood breakfast bar. For the bar area, we used Pronorm Proline MP Dark Steel which has a textured satin matt finish slightly different from the kitchen units but still works well with the overall design. We added some black framed glass units for the glassware, adding character to the area and distinction from the kitchen. Lastly, we added some chrome, bright red, and bright orange accessories to add fun and colour to the space without deviating too much from the dark and dramatic design theme.
