This extension of a 100-year old cottage in beautiful, pastoral Little Compton created a comfortable, cozy environment for domestic life and entertaining – spaces that are as unpretentious as the simple original building. Unique elements include bluestone countertops and hearth slab, custom vessel sinks and tiles created by the owner – a talented ceramic artist, a freestanding two-way hearth, salvaged antique doors and hardware, interior sliding barn doors and custom walnut casework.

We planned a thoughtful redesign of this beautiful home while retaining many of the existing features. We wanted this house to feel the immediacy of its environment. So we carried the exterior front entry style into the interiors, too, as a way to bring the beautiful outdoors in. In addition, we added patios to all the bedrooms to make them feel much bigger. Luckily for us, our temperate California climate makes it possible for the patios to be used consistently throughout the year. The original kitchen design did not have exposed beams, but we decided to replicate the motif of the 30" living room beams in the kitchen as well, making it one of our favorite details of the house. To make the kitchen more functional, we added a second island allowing us to separate kitchen tasks. The sink island works as a food prep area, and the bar island is for mail, crafts, and quick snacks. We designed the primary bedroom as a relaxation sanctuary – something we highly recommend to all parents. It features some of our favorite things: a cognac leather reading chair next to a fireplace, Scottish plaid fabrics, a vegetable dye rug, art from our favorite cities, and goofy portraits of the kids. --- Project designed by Courtney Thomas Design in La Cañada. Colorful, vibrant, inviting and cozy was the design vision for this great room. Ample seating for everyone to enjoy movie time or staying warm by the fireplace. On either side of the fireplace are built-in custom benches with stunning pendants above.

Sited in the woodsy hills of San Anselmo, this house suffered from oddities of scale and organization as well as a rather low grade of detailing and finish. This design savvy couple saw the property’s potential and turned to building Lab to develop it into a home for their young, growing family. Initial discussions centered on expanding the kitchen and master bath but grew to encapsulate the entire house. With a bit of creative thinking we met the challenge of expanding both the sense of and actual space without the full cost of an addition. An earlier addition had included a screened-in porch which, with the floor and roof already framed, we now saw as the perfect place to expand the kitchen. Capturing this space effectively doubled the size of the kitchen and dramatically improved both natural light and the engagement to rear deck and landscape. The lushly forested surrounds cued the generous application of walnut cabinetry and details. Exposed cold rolled steel components infused the space with a rustic simplicity that the original detailing lacked but seemed to want. Replacement of hollow core six panel doors with solid core slabs, simplification of trim profiles and skim coating all sheetrock refined the overall feel. Ultimately, pretty much every surface - including the exterior - received our attention. On approach, the project maintains the house’s original sense of modesty. On the interior, warmth, refinement and livability are achieved by finding what the house had to offer rather than aggressive reinvention. photos by scott hargis

A large common living room area is a perfect place to kick off your shoes and relax. A two sided 19 foot tall fireplace with steel panels and heavy concrete columns is definitely the focal point of the two story space, and you can't forget to look at those wood beams on the ceiling. This room is not just the the gathering area of the home it is also the aesthetic core of the project.
