Embedded in a Colorado ski resort and accessible only via snowmobile during the winter season, this 1,000 square foot cabin rejects anything ostentatious and oversized, instead opting for a cozy and sustainable retreat from the elements. This zero-energy grid-independent home relies greatly on passive solar siting and thermal mass to maintain a welcoming temperature even on the coldest days. Poised on the edge of a deep ravine overlooking the beautiful Barton Creek, the core of this 1960’s renovated home centers on the kitchen. This particular space was artfully collaborated on with the home's owner, who is the owner and chef of one of Austin's premiere restaurants. The original 155 square foot kitchen was not inspiring at all to the culinary professional who was unhappy with the size, layout, lighting, space, lack of appliances, and overall outdated style. One of the key goals was to create a space not only for everyday cooking, but for entertaining as well. The overall design of the kitchen incorporates large amounts of counter space, commercial-style appliances, transparent refrigerator and pantry, as well as natural lighting to pair with necessary task lighting. The openness of the design allows for the dining area to seamlessly flow into the space for everyday family gatherings or entertaining on special occasions. Photography by Adam Steiner

This unique, new construction, Kitchen mixes color and texture. Blocks of cast glass were fabricated and back painted white to builder's specification. The custom, art-glass counters display a bubbled texture, reflecting natural daylight. This L-shaped kitchen design includes a floating island with an raised bar. Wood flooring matched with flat panel painted cabinets and stainless steel fixtures lends itself to a transitional or eclectic style. Fabrication by J.C Moag Glass, located in Jeffersonville, Indiana and servicing Ketuckiana and the Ohio valley area. With a full set of Siemens appliances, including a 5-burner gas hob and domino flex induction cooktop, a Quooker boiling water tap and a CDA wine cooler, this breath-taking kitchen leaves nothing to be desired in terms of its amazing cooking capabilities. A simple monochrome colour palette allows the details of this dramatic interior to do the talking. The brushed aluminium finish on the kitchen island and the luxurious gloss black breakfast bar create a bold contrast against the organic textural surface of the tall cabinets.
