Kosher Kitchen
Kosher Kitchen
Drury DesignDrury Design
THE SETUP Multiple ovens, multiple workspaces, multiple sinks – when you think about it, non-jewish kitchens have been adapting the criteria of kosher kitchens for years. Gladys’ clients in West Rogers Park are Orthodox Jewish. The house they bought already had a kosher kitchen – it just wasn’t done that well. It needed some more things to be duplicated for the dairy side and the meat side. Plus, it was dark and the configuration wasn’t very conducive for a family of eight. It was time for a remodel. Design Objectives Improve kosher kitchen Add more storage in the island Better lighting More open, lighter feel Change the wood floor in the kitchen to tile THE REMODEL Design Challenges - We had originally planned on removing a wing wall by the breakfast area. During demolition, we learned it contained a support beam. - The kitchen is a substantial size, but having two sinks, dishwashers, and ovens presented a challenge – how do we fit it all in and make it flow with the storage still accessible near the work areas? Where do you stop the materials for the new space? - -- The right tile, paint, lighting, etc. would be needed to make the remodeled area cohesive with the rest of the main floor. - An existing column limited cabinet options and thus, storage capacity. Could we conceal it without disrupting the cabinetry flow? Design Solutions - We had to keep the wing wall, but decided to continue the tile on the sides of the cabinets and maintain the height of the tile to line up with the rest of the backsplash. This actually presented a very nice and cohesive look, especially since the opposite side has a wing wall to the left of the refrigerator. - We used “L-shaped” corner sinks instead of the rectangular ones set on an angle. This gave us more of the legs of the triangles versus the hypotenuse, which allowed for the two dishwashers, and the pullout utensil canisters and spice pullouts while still keeping the 3-drawer cabinets on either side of the range (by the sinks). The old island had the recess for stools which the family never used. By extending the width of the island 6” and utilizing this leg space, we were able to fit 18”-deep cabinets on this side – adding lots of accessible storage. The family can now work simultaneously on the dairy side (the side with the fridge) and the meat side (opposite) without getting in each other’s way. We separated the cooking by using the range oven for the meat and a built-in microwave in the base cabinet. The wall oven with built-in microwave on top is for dairy. - Corner sinks opened up the middle area for a wider range – we went from a 30” to a 36”. Removing all the wall cabinets (on the range wall) made a big difference. That opened up the entire space while adding some visual impact. (Not pictured: We also made the cabinets directly opposite the range wall tall and removed the countertop, resulting in more room for rollouts and even more storage!) The kitchen now has more storage than it did before. - We ended up painting the ceiling of the kitchen into the hallway that leads to the foyer. The living and dining rooms were separated by a soffit, so that became a natural boundary. We kept the tile in the kitchen by stopping it short of the hallway and lining it up with the pantry wall. This creates a border between the breakfast area and family room. The rest of the existing wood floors were refinished to refresh and make the hue darker. We also painted a dark accent wall and carried it into the breakfast area to make the rooms look deeper. - The in-the-way column housed plumbing and couldn’t be moved. We still built cabinets in that spot – we just had to build a chase inside it to conceal the pipes. There was still plenty of room for new storage. We also took the cabinets all the way to the ceiling. The continuous tall cabinets added a functional elegance to the space. THE RENEWED SPACE The client’s long-awaited dream of a better kosher kitchen has finally been achieved, beautifully combining enhanced storage solutions with adherence to the family’s orthodox dietary laws. The kitchen’s standout feature, an expanded island, now offers a spacious and efficient workspace. This allows several family members to cook together comfortably, without the inconvenience of bumping into each other, ensuring a harmonious and productive cooking environment.

Contemporary German Kitchen in Horsham, West Sussex A rethink of this Horsham kitchen helped create a new functional island space, new kitchen entrance and matching utility. The Brief This client sought to make changes to their previous kitchen involving a rethink of their kitchen island, in addition to an all-round modernisation. From early project conversations it was clear that well organised storage was key, as well as including plenty of worktop space. As part of the project, creating a new doorway into the kitchen was also required, as well as an in keeping renovation of a utility space. Design Elements Designer Alistair has utilised a layout not dissimilar from the previous kitchen, instead replacing stand-alone island with a peninsula island space connected to the kitchen. This minor layout change helped to incorporate the vast worktop space this client required, as well as the social island area that the client desired. A subtle two-tone theme was another wish of the client, with glossy handleless finishes Satin Grey and Slate Grey contributing to the contemporary aesthetic of this space. The design is accompanied by plenty of lighting options to add a further modern feel, including undercabinet downlights, ceiling downlights and plinth lighting. Behind the hob a glass splashback has been included which has been chosen in a black shimmer finish, complimenting the overall design as well as the white quartz work surfaces, named Snowy Ibiza. Special Inclusions The client was keen to keep the kitchen area feeling light and spacious, and so another key part of the design was the use of full-height cabinetry to house the majority of appliances. Here a number of Neff appliances feature, including a Slide & Hide oven, combination oven, warming drawer, refrigerator and freezer which have both been integrated behind furniture. A Neff hob has been placed just to the side, above which a built-in Neff extractor is integrated to remove any cooking odours. Opposite, a Quooker boiling water tap has been installed above a Blanco quartz composed sink which ties in nicely with the chosen work surface. Looking towards the utility area, sideboard style furniture has been included as a space to store small appliances that are used daily, as well as cupboard space for added extra storage. Here you can also see the new doorway into the kitchen, which leads from the hallway of this property. Project Highlight A matching utility upgrade was a key part of this project, and designer Alistair was tasked with integrating extra storage, laundry appliances, plus a small sink area. This area makes use of Satin Grey furniture and a laminate work surface option. Beneath the work surface you might also spot a bed area for this client’s pooch. The End Result For this project designer Alistair has created a clever design to achieve all the elements of this project brief, including an important island change and a matching utility. With this project involving a full kitchen and utility renovation, flooring improvement throughout and even building work for a new doorway; this project highlights the amazing results that can be achieved utilising our complete design and installation service. This kitchen has been designed by George Harvey from our Horsham showroom and installed by our kitchen installation team in the local Horsham area. This kitchen has been designed to utilise the space and light made be an existing conservatory to the rear of the kitchen which it does fantastically. The kitchen furniture used for this project is from Nobilia, a German kitchen manufacturer that offers an extensive range of modern, shaker and traditional kitchens. The German Nobilia furniture used for this kitchen is from the Touch range which is a matt effect range. The Super-Matt effect of this door means that is silky to touch while the lacquered laminate coating means that it is highly resistant to fingerprint marks and scratching. The touch range is one of our most popular ranges due to its texture, vast range of colours and ability to contrast with a secondary colour or stand alone as a single tone like in this kitchen. To make the most of the conservatory area in this kitchen George has used a peninsula island to create a dining and entertaining area in the lighter area of the room. In the same area exposed shelving is used as a place to store decorative items. Two exposed shelving units have also been used under the beam in this kitchen to make extra storage space again for either decorative items or kitchen essentials. This kitchen also uses the popular Nobilia 350 handle which is fitted to the top or bottom of a drawer or cupboard for sleek and easy access to units.
