The original kitchen was designed and built by the original homeowner, needless to say neither design nor building was his profession. Further, the entire house has hydronic tubing in gypcrete for heat which means to utilities (water, ventilation or power) could be brought up through the floor or down from the ceiling except on the the exterior walls. The current homeowners love to cook and have a seasonal garden that generates a lot of lovely fruits and vegetables for both immediate consumption and preserving, hence, kitchen counter space, two sinks, the induction cooktop and the steam oven were all 'must haves' for both the husband and the wife. The beautiful wood plank porcelain tile floors ensures a slip resistant floor that is sturdy enough to stand up to their three four-legged children. Utilizing the three existing j-boxes in the ceiling, the cable and rail system combined with the under cabinet light illuminates every corner of this formerly dark kitchen. The existing kitchen was a small 7.5 x 11.5 area with inadequate heating and limited natural light, available through an awkward peninsula dividing the kitchen from a previous family room addition. The design concept was to create a larger, brighter and more open space integrated with an outdoor deck (not shown) off the family room, creating a family and guest gathering space within the overall kitchen area. The layout was centered around a large “island-table” with seating for seven; extensive countertop space and separate cooktop and ovens allow for family member participation in meal preparation. The design theme was contemporary, with warm, muted colors and textures. Cabinets were an engineered veneer grey oak with slab door style and obscured glass in the upper cabinets. Countertops are neutral quartz, flooring a natural oak, 5” plank engineered hardwood.

This two-tone kitchen was an addition to a 100+ year-old, off-the-grid camp in the Adirondacks. The homeowner paid a great deal of attention to detail. The painted Plain & Fancy Shaker cabinets were done in Triton blue, and blend very nicely with the Plain & Fancy Nantucket bead board style pantry and peninsula backing, in quartersawn white oak. She chose tin ceiling in stainless steel for the wall behind the wood stove to match the propane gas stove. Custom window and door trim was created using the original camp trim so the addition looks like it is original to the camp. Kitchen features include a Hafele Arena Lemans blind corner swing out and a lazy Susan without a center pole to make use of corner spaces. Open shelving and the Brooks Custom Woodworks butch block top give an old-world feel to the kitchen.

A classic simplicity and added bling are blended here in this inviting family friendly kitchen. The deep gray color on the simple recessed door style provides a dramatic backdrop for the stainless steel appliances, satin nickel cabinet hardware, and the teal, beige and blue accents. The fanciful chandeliers made of hundreds of glass droplets were chosen by the client for added sparkle to complete the look. A large island with centered cooktop, prep sink, undercounter wine refrigerator, and an abundance of utility and pan drawers provides ample work area for the cook to interact with family and friends. Behind this is a microwave “hutch”, flanked by a large stainless built-in refrigerator on one side and stainless built-in wall ovens on the other side, giving a balanced look and allowing for a landing pad in the center. Totally separate are the cleanup sink with dishwasher and double trash to allow for a second person to be working in the kitchen at the same time. All in all, this is a very functional kitchen for one cook or many.

Like many, this family spends a lot time in the back half of their home. Built in 1988, the kitchen and family room were cramped and dimly lit. With this remodel, they wanted a larger space to provide both an updated gourmet kitchen and a family room suitable for entertaining. While unsure of what new products and current styles to incorporate, these empty-nesters definitely had some notions of what they didn’t like although they didn’t always agree. A Galley Kitchen redo. Had to work with the existing Saltillo Tile floors but cooled down the over all effect with Grey Cabinets and a Blue Glass Backsplash. Stainless Steel Appliances and Black Accent Pendants made the room much more Transitional in appearance.
