From bare studs to bright and stunning, This customer tore their former kitchen down to its foundation to build this kitchen inspiration. With a soft blend of whites, grays, and Hickory wood throughout the space, the natural light from the windows makes this kitchen glow with warmth. This kitchen is an example of when simplistic elegance is enough. Featuring a custom beverage bar, a charming small desk, a walk-in pantry, as well as an intentional bottom-heavy design with few wall cabinets, this kitchen marries aesthetics and functionality, the familiarity of a farmhouse, and the efficiency of a commercial kitchen.

When the homeowners purchased this Victorian family home, they immediately set about planning the extension that would create a more viable space for an open plan kitchen, dining and living area. Approximately two years later their dream home is now finished. The extension was designed off the original kitchen and has a large roof lantern that sits directly above the main kitchen and soft seating area beyond. French windows open out onto the garden which is perfect for the summer months. This is truly a classic contemporary space that feels so calm and collected when you walk in – the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern family living. Carefully zoning the kitchen, dining and living areas was the key to the success of this project and it works perfectly. The classic Lacanche range cooker is housed in a false chimney that is designed to suit the proportion and scale of the room perfectly. The Lacanche oven is the 100cm Cluny model with two large ovens – one static and one dual function static / convection with a classic 5 burner gas hob. Finished in stainless steel with a brass trim, this classic French oven looks completely at home in this Humphrey Munson kitchen. The main prep area is on the island positioned directly in front of the main cooking run, with a prep sink handily located to the left hand side. There is seating for three at the island with a breakfast bar at the opposite end to the prep sink which is conveniently located near to the banquette dining area. Delineated from the prep area by the natural wooden worktop finished in Portobello oak (the same accent wood used throughout the kitchen), the breakfast bar is a great spot for serving drinks to friends before dinner or for the children to have their meals at breakfast time and after school. The sink run is on the other side of the L shape in this kitchen and it has open artisan shelves above for storing everyday items like glassware and tableware. Either side of the sink is an integrated Miele dishwasher and a pull out Eurocargo bin to make clearing away dishes really easy. The use of open shelving here really helps the space to feel open and calm and there is a curved countertop cupboard in the corner providing space for storing teas, coffees and biscuits so that everything is to hand when making hot drinks. The Fisher & Paykel fridge freezer has Nickleby cabinetry surrounding it with space above for storing cookbooks but there is also another under-counter fridge in the island for additional cold food storage. The cook’s pantry provides masses of storage for dry ingredients as well as housing the freestanding microwave which is always a fantastic option when you want to keep integrated appliances to a minimum in order to maximise storage space in the main kitchen. Hardware throughout this kitchen is antique brass – this is a living finish that weathers with use over time. The glass globe pendant lighting above the island was designed by us and has antique brass hardware too. The flooring is Babington limestone tumbled which has bags of character thanks to the natural fissures within the stone and creates the perfect flooring choice for this classic contemporary kitchen. The existing kitchen layout created tight work aisles, minimal counter and storage space, and utilized only 62% of the overall available space, which was the impetus for the remodel. The clients’ wanted a modern farmhouse feel, but their overall focus was specific: “quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a well thought out and creative redesign for the spaces”. They also requested designated areas for baking, entertaining, and family meals, double ovens, better ventilation, island seating, a wet bar, and the addition of mudroom storage. Creating a design that not only fulfilled their wish list, but felt cohesive, and left as little “unused” space as possible, was the major challenge of this project. A large part of that challenge was not being able to change or eliminate any of the existing entryways and windows. This made the location of the island critical, as it needed to leave clearances for work aisles, seating, and walkways. The island seating is provided by a Wenge “Flying W” top that cantilevers out from its corner and is supported by recessed steel supports and waterfall ends, adding interest and dimension to the large rectangular space. Proper ventilation was achieved, along with creating a focal point, by moving the cooktop to the exterior wall and designing a custom wood hood above, that is ducted directly outside. Adding bench seating from the base cabinets to the East wall, created the connection the space needed. Opposite of the bench seats, the wet bar is also connected to the East wall, and is easily accessible from the dining room, kitchen table, and island. To create the modern farmhouse aesthetic, a mix of white and seafoam painted cabinetry were accented with stained cherry interiors, trims, and shelves, which mimicked the cherry hardwoods in the adjacent rooms and staircases. Built-in cabinetry that matched the kitchen was added to the mudroom, which included a bench seat with vented shoe storage, hooks, and a tall cabinet with an outlet for their vacuum. The addition of a pop-up mixer lift, deep storage drawers, a microwave drawer, and a lower cabinet at the end of the island, with a soapstone top, and includes a stainless-steel baking drawer organizer, makes for the ultimate “baking center”. LED lights inside and under the wall cabinets provide task lighting at the quartzite countertops, as well as mood lighting when dimmed.

Kowalske Kitchen & Bath was the remodeling contractor for this beautiful Waukesha first floor remodel. The homeowners recently purchased the home and wanted to immediately update the space. The old kitchen was outdated and closed off from the great room. The goal was to design an open-concept space for hosting family and friends. LAYOUT The first step was to remove the awkward dining room walls. This made the room feel large and open. We tucked the refrigerator into a wall of cabinets so it didn’t impose. Seating at the island and peninsula makes the kitchen very versatile. DESIGN We created an elegant entertaining space to take advantage of the lake view. The Waukesha homeowners wanted a contemporary design with neutral colors and finishes. They chose soft gray lower cabinets and white upper cabinets. We added texture with wood accents and a herringbone marble backsplash tile. The desk area features a walnut butcher block countertop. We also used walnut for the open shelving, detail on the hood and the legs on the island. CUSTOM CABINETRY Frameless custom cabinets maximize storage in this Waukesha kitchen. The upper cabinets have hidden light rail molding. Angled plug molding eliminates outlets on the backsplash. Drawers in the lower cabinets allow for excellent storage. The cooktop has a functioning top drawer with a hidden apron to hide the guts of the cooktop. The clients also asked for a home office desk area and pantry cabinet.

This expansive Victorian had tremendous historic charm but hadn’t seen a kitchen renovation since the 1950s. The homeowners wanted to take advantage of their views of the backyard and raised the roof and pushed the kitchen into the back of the house, where expansive windows could allow southern light into the kitchen all day. A warm historic gray/beige was chosen for the cabinetry, which was contrasted with character oak cabinetry on the appliance wall and bar in a modern chevron detail. Beautiful kitchen remodel in Roscoe Village. We designed this project to go with the design of the existing house and to totally refresh the kitchen and attached living space. We used distressed cherry hardwood with a warm stain color for the island, not only for looks, but also for durability.

The unsual setting of the property on a hill in Kingston, along with tricky planning considerations, meant that we had to achieve a space split into different floor levels and with an irregular shape. This allowed us to create diverse spaces inside and out maximizing the natural light ingress on the east and south whilst optimizing the connection between internal and external areas. Vaulted ceilings, crisp finishes, minimalistic lines, modern windows and doors, and a sharp composite cladding resulted in an elegant, airy, and well-lighted dream home.
