Our design process is set up to tease out what is unique about a project and a client so that we can create something peculiar to them. When we first went to see this client, we noticed that they used their fridge as a kind of notice board to put up pictures by the kids, reminders, lists, cards etc… with magnets onto the metal face of the old fridge. In their new kitchen they wanted integrated appliances and for things to be neat, but we felt these drawings and cards needed a place to be celebrated and we proposed a cork panel integrated into the cabinet fronts… the idea developed into a full band of cork, stained black to match the black front of the oven, to bind design together. It also acts as a bit of a sound absorber (important when you have 3yr old twins!) and sits over the splash back so that there is a lot of space to curate an evolving backdrop of things you might pin to it. In this design, we wanted to design the island as big table in the middle of the room. The thing about thinking of an island like a piece of furniture in this way is that it allows light and views through and around; it all helps the island feel more delicate and elegant… and the room less taken up by island. The frame is made from solid oak and we stained it black to balance the composition with the stained cork. The sink run is a set of floating drawers that project from the wall and the flooring continues under them - this is important because again, it makes the room feel more spacious. The full height cabinets are purposefully a calm, matt off white. We used Farrow and Ball ’School house white’… because its our favourite ‘white’ of course! All of the whitegoods are integrated into this full height run: oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and a gigantic pantry cupboard. A sweet detail is the hand turned cabinet door knobs - The clients are music lovers and the knobs are enlarged versions of the volume knob from a 1970s record player.

1950's mid-century modern beach house built by architect Richard Leitch in Carpinteria, California. Leitch built two one-story adjacent homes on the property which made for the perfect space to share seaside with family. In 2016, Emily restored the homes with a goal of melding past and present. Emily kept the beloved simple mid-century atmosphere while enhancing it with interiors that were beachy and fun yet durable and practical. The project also required complete re-landscaping by adding a variety of beautiful grasses and drought tolerant plants, extensive decking, fire pits, and repaving the driveway with cement and brick.

This is one of our favorite kitchen projects! We started by deleting two walls and a closet, followed by framing in the new eight foot window and walk-in pantry. We stretched the existing kitchen across the entire room, and built a huge nine foot island with a gas range and custom hood. New cabinets, appliances, elm flooring, custom woodwork, all finished off with a beautiful rustic white brick.

Linen White cabinets from Waypoint Living Spaces, wavy glass pendants, sparkly sea glass tile, ocean rippled glass cabinet inserts and sandy Quartz countertops- Silestone Ocean Jasper, complete her look for a calming space she adores

The perimeter cabinets are Legacy and have a full overlay. The door style is Caldwell with 5 pc. drawer fronts. The wood species is Maple and has been pained a warm white called Linen.

Warm wood finishes on the flooring, hickory open shelves, and ceiling timbers float on a neutral paint palette of soft whites and tans. Black elements on the cabinetry, interior doors, furniture elements, and decorative lighting act as the “little black dress” of the room. The hand applied plaster-style finish on the fireplace in a charcoal tone provide texture and interest to this focal point of the great room space. With large sliding doors overlooking the backyard and pool this ADU is the perfect oasis with all the conveniences of home!

Reorganized kitchen and living room space. Walls were removed to open up and reconfigure the existing space. The ceiling was raised to give a more spacious look.

This 1960's kitchen condo had a dated floorplan. It was cramped, tiny and separated from the main living/dining area. To create a space more suitable for entertaining, all three walls were removed. The old bar area was incorporated into the new footprint. Brick veneer was used as a kitchen backsplash, installed up to the ceiling and around the side. It gives the illusion that the brick was always there, lurking behind the wall. To hide the electrical components, we added soffits and posts. This helped define the kitchen area. A knee wall in front of the island hides more electrical and adds counter depth. The open space between the counters was extended from 36 inches to 50, making it comfortable for multiple chefs. When a client buys an old home next to a resort spa you have to add some current functionality and style to make it the desired modern beach cottage. For the renovation, we worked with the team including the builder, architect and of course the home owners to brightening the home with new windows, moving walls all the while keeping the over all scope and budget from not getting out of control. The master bathroom is clean and modern but we also keep the budget in mind and used luxury vinyl flooring with a custom tile detail where it meets with the shower. We decided to keep the front door and work into the new materials by adding rustic reclaimed wood that we hand selected. The project required creativity throughout to maximize the design style but still respect the overall budget since it was a large scape project.
