This modern kitchen remodeling project was a delight to have worked on. The client brought us the idea and colors they were looking to incorperate. The finished project is this one of a kind piece of work. With it's burnt orange flooring, blue/gray and white cabinets, it has become a favorite at first sight.

The homeowners wanted to take advantage of induction cooking, but were hesitant because of their unfamiliarity. I suggested reducing their cooktop from 36” to 30” and adding a 15” gas cooktop. This project involved re-working the existing interior layout to give the home a new, open concept floor plan, breaking up the feeling of four separate rooms on the first floor. We met our clients’ needs through the following: We built a designated area for their three kids to enjoy snacks and do their homework after school. There are three regular cooks in the home, so an open space was created that was suitable for 2-3 chefs to work comfortably. Because the clients love to look up new recipe and meal ideas, a separate desk area for their computer, with internet access, was created. We incorporated clients’ love of the bead board look within the cabinetry. We incorporated an accessible and aesthetically pleasing three shelf built-in space within the island to store cookbooks and other belongings. Improved previous interior lighting by adding three hanging lights over the island, updating ceiling lighting and building French doors in the dining room space. Made the kitchen open to the living room so family and guests can continuously interact. Spice storage was a concern, so we built a four row pull-out spice rack near the stove. New kitchen appliances were creatively incorporated that were not originally there. A total of four interior walls were removed to create the open concept floor plan. We faced a constraint when we had to install a structural LVL beam since we removed a load bearing wall. We also met design challenges, such as adding pantry storage, natural lighting, spice storage, trash pull-outs and enough space to comfortably fit at least three chefs in the kitchen at a time, within the existing footprint of the house. The clients had waited 11 years for a new kitchen and they didn’t want to hold back on what they really wanted. The clients finally received a creative and practical kitchen, while still staying within their budget.

Dutton Architects did an extensive renovation of a post and beam mid-century modern house in the canyons of Beverly Hills. The house was brought down to the studs, with new interior and exterior finishes, windows and doors, lighting, etc. A secure exterior door allows the visitor to enter into a garden before arriving at a glass wall and door that leads inside, allowing the house to feel as if the front garden is part of the interior space. Similarly, large glass walls opening to a new rear gardena and pool emphasizes the indoor-outdoor qualities of this house. photos by Undine Prohl

This kitchen design packs ample work and storage areas into every available space. The white chocolate finish Medallion kitchen cabinets with a burnt sienna glaze include concealed hinges and slow close doors and drawers. The U-shaped design includes a peninsula with space for seating, and additional cabinets incorporate a built-in television and extra storage. A Rev-a-shelf pull out ironing board is neatly concealed inside the cabinets. The design is complemented by a mosaic tile backsplash, hardwood floors, and Top Knobs hardware.

It shouldn’t be shocking that Mid-westerns are the last to experience the trends trickling in from the east and west coasts. While contemporary styles in white and grey have been flooding their homes over the past 3-5 years, homeowners in the Midwest seem to choose warmer hues in transitional styles. When brainstorming what our next display should encompass, we decided to blend the trends we see emerging in the Midwest with a cool, fun edge. Transitioning modern to Minnesota involves warmer colors, texture and depth to design. Flat panel doors in an off-white paired with a rich and earthy textured melamine encompass just that. Mixing metals, especially with gold is becoming increasingly popular. The display is shown blending stainless steel with fun, accessories in gold. Homeowners are beginning to like both the ease and the look of simplicity. As shown in our display, they are pairing flat-panel doors with a c-channel to take the place of knobs and pulls. Quartz countertops in a 2 cm (3/4”) thickness are almost always paired with this style, sometimes in a matte finish as they are a new trend and also reduce glare. This dark brown, almost black matte quartz top is shown contrasting against the glossy warm-white base cabinets in the display. Who hasn’t been on their hands and knees digging countlessly for the matching container and lid? Interior cabinet accessories save time and energy. Some trends in kitchen organization that the display incorporates include hands-free waste bins, knife/utensil pull-outs, container organizers, corner pull-outs, pull-out towel bars, Keurig cup organizers and dishware drawers. Having an organized kitchen is an upgrade but it without a doubt keeps us sane. What’s a space that doesn’t ignite a spark of interest? Have fun with it! In this space the existing circular soffit was designed around, yet celebrated. A bubble mosaic backsplash layered with bubble glass doors and decorative spheres are a fun way to play with shape. With bold light fixtures being a big trend for 2017, finding the perfect statement fixture for the space was the icing on the cake. Color can always personalize a space. In this case, the Pantone color of the year, Greenery #15-0343, became an inspiration when selecting accessories. Anyone with a sense of humor will appreciate the golden “man handle”. After all, we all love a great conversation piece.
