This project incorporated the main floor of the home. The existing kitchen was narrow and dated, and closed off from the rest of the common spaces. The client’s wish list included opening up the space to combine the dining room and kitchen, create a more functional entry foyer, and update the dark sunporch to be more inviting. The concept resulted in swapping the kitchen and dining area, creating a perfect flow from the entry through to the sunporch. The new kitchen features blue-gray cabinets with polished white countertops and a white island with a dramatic Cielo Quartzite countertop. The soffit above features stained shiplap, helping to create the boundary of the kitchen. Custom window treatments and rattan chairs make the space feel casual and sophisticated.

This 1970's home had a complete makeover! The goal of the project was to 1) open up the main floor living and gathering spaces and 2) create a more beautiful and functional kitchen. We took out the dividing wall between the front living room and the kitchen and dining room to create one large gathering space, perfect for a young family and for entertaining friends! Onto the exciting part - the kitchen! The existing kitchen was U-Shaped with not much room to have more than 1 person working at a time. We kept the appliances in the same locations, but really expanded the amount of workspace and cabinet storage by taking out the peninsula and adding a large island. The cabinetry, from Holiday Kitchens, is a blue-gray color on the lowers and classic white on the uppers. The countertops are walnut butcherblock on the perimeter and a marble looking quartz on the island. The backsplash, one of our favorites, is a diamond shaped mosaic in a rhombus pattern, which adds just the right amount of texture without overpowering all the gorgeous details of the cabinets and countertops. The hardware is a champagne bronze - one thing we love to do is mix and match our metals! The faucet is from Kohler and is in Matte Black, the sink is from Blanco and is white. The flooring is a luxury vinyl plank with a warm wood tone - which helps bring all the elements of the kitchen together we think! Overall - this is one of our favorite kitchens to date - so many beautiful details on their own, but put together create this gorgeous kitchen!

The center island features cabinetry and drawers on the sink side. Behind, the pantry area fits a full-height cabinet, double ovens, and a refrigerator with bottom-mount freezer.

We planned a thoughtful redesign of this beautiful home while retaining many of the existing features. We wanted this house to feel the immediacy of its environment. So we carried the exterior front entry style into the interiors, too, as a way to bring the beautiful outdoors in. In addition, we added patios to all the bedrooms to make them feel much bigger. Luckily for us, our temperate California climate makes it possible for the patios to be used consistently throughout the year. The original kitchen design did not have exposed beams, but we decided to replicate the motif of the 30" living room beams in the kitchen as well, making it one of our favorite details of the house. To make the kitchen more functional, we added a second island allowing us to separate kitchen tasks. The sink island works as a food prep area, and the bar island is for mail, crafts, and quick snacks. We designed the primary bedroom as a relaxation sanctuary – something we highly recommend to all parents. It features some of our favorite things: a cognac leather reading chair next to a fireplace, Scottish plaid fabrics, a vegetable dye rug, art from our favorite cities, and goofy portraits of the kids. --- Project designed by Courtney Thomas Design in La Cañada. What transforms an ordinary box into something unique and special? Details! Here is a list of the few highlighted details that might have otherwise been overlooked yet were incorporated for a beautiful layered effect. 1. Exposed door hinges 2. Two different door profiles, shaker and slab 3. Textured glass versus clear glass 4. Framed cabinetry 5. Two different countertop profile edges, straight edge and Bryn edge 6. Quartz slab for backsplash with cut out that mimics the molding detail of the hood. 7. Different paint finishes, high gloss black on hood and satin on remaining cabinetry…the list continues.

room2improve worked with this client on their kitchen design and selection of finishes as well as resources fro cabinetry and contractors. This is one of many kitchen and bath designs we consult on each year. We used an exotic granite on the island, and contrasted it with a white engineered quartz on the surrounding counters. The soft buttery yellow of the island is also parent in the quartz backsplash tile.
