THE SETUP Senior Designer Diana Burton’s client loved her sixties-era home – it just needed some work. The cozy galley kitchen was narrow and mostly closed off from the family room. A pass-through window served as a limited pipeline for treats and chatter. The appliances were failing, too. It was simply time for an overhaul. Design Objectives: Remove load bearing wall and open kitchen to the family room Omit large unused fireplace in family room Increase work surfaces and overall storage solutions Dedicated small countertop appliance storage Seating for 3 or 4 at island Add pantry storage Offer solution for lack of mudroom Upgrade all appliances THE REMODEL Design Challenges: Finding a location to hide structural support for new beam Reworking awkward configuration of existing walls Adding a walk-in pantry Creating mudroom storage Allowing room for large sectional in family room Design Solutions: Add a discreet column by the fridge to hide essential support Flush out wall by bath to be even with the range wall, where the new walk in pantry exists Use void space behind new wall for large appliance garage Create combination walk in pantry/mudroom by adding bench with shoe storage and hooks Maintain island depth for comfortable seating without infringing on space for the sectional THE RENEWED SPACE This cramped, dated kitchen has a new lease on life! Opening it to the family room dramatically transformed the space. Diana’s client now has plenty of storage, a big island for food prep, and an open-concept space that’s perfect for entertaining and hanging out with friends and family.

The banquette is backed up to counter space on one side and open to the other. Soffits with downlighting and uplighting bridge the difference between cooking and dining areas.

Subtle, warm, and intuitive. This light and airy environment is perfectly suited to the understated tones of Alta butter gloss and the lambent beauty of the Deda matt walnut fascias. Blend medium walnut frames with opaco pearl white glass centre panels to create a guaranteed talking point. The base cabinets show grain running horizontally through 4 consecutive fascias, stretching the boundaries and limitations of the veneer, before another sheet of veneer is used for the final two doors. Imposing large wall fascias that adroitly include beveled edges running into perfectly crafted beveled edged panels.

Modern and elegant whilst being inspiring and bold - here you see a harmonious kitchen and living environment created using Alta and Deda. The striking beauty and exclusivity of Deda Ebony Emara gloss cabinets to the left with vertical grain, mixed with the imposing simplicity of the Alta matt magma lacquered finish on base and island units. The Deda Ebony Emara gloss base units feature grain running through from bottom to top drawer fronts. Innovation in design has allowed the creation of dual level island units. Not only an inspirational aesthetic focal point but a congregational locus where kitchen and living areas combine. Due to the bespoke nature of the product range an extra wide and deep drawer front on the lower island is possible. The devil is in the detail though with a chamfered top edge drawer front with side bevel on the drawer and matching end panel. Design meets practicality. A double bevelled door works in perfect harmony with aluminium profiles to conceal a larder storage system.

The contemporary design of this kitchen allows the unique materials used in the space to be the focus. White Caesar stone counter tops, Pocelanosa tile back splash and custom cherry wood cabinets walnut stain all set against the back ground of a stunning natural Brazilian cherry wood floor that continues throughout the house into the other living spaces.
