Working with interior designer Hilary Scott, Mowlem & Co has created a stylish and sympathetic bespoke kitchen for a fascinating renovation and extension project. The impressive Victorian detached house has ‘an interesting planning history’ according to Hilary. Previously it had been bedsit accommodation with 27 units but in recent years it had become derelict and neglected, until was bought by a premiere league footballer with a view to restoring it to its former glory as a family home. Situated near the Botanic Gardens in Kew and in a conservation area, there was a significant investment and considerable planning negotiation to get it returned to a single dwelling. Hilary had worked closely with the client on previous projects and had their couple’s full trust to come up with a scheme that matched their tastes and needs. Many original features were restored or replaced to remain in keeping with the architecture, for example marble and cast iron fireplaces, panelling, cornices and architraves which were considered a key fabric of the building. The most contemporary element of the renovation is the striking double height glass extension to the rear in which the kitchen and living area are positioned. The room has wonderful views out to the garden is ideal both for family life and entertaining. The extension design involved an architect for the original plans and another to project-manage the build. Then Mowlem & Co were brought in because Hilary has worked with them for many years and says they were the natural choice to achieve the high quality of finish and bespoke joinery that was required. “They have done an amazing job,” says Hilary, “the design has certain quirky touches and an individual feel that you can only get with bespoke. All the timber has traditionally made dovetail joints and other handcrafted details. This is typical of Mowlem & Co’s work …they have a fantastic team and Julia Brown, who managed this project, is a great kitchen designer.” The kitchen has been conceived to match the contemporary feel of the new extension while also having a classic feel in terms of the finishes, such as the stained oak and exposed brickwork. The furniture has been made to bespoke proportions to match the scale of the double height extension, so that it fits the architecture. The look is clean and linear in feel and the design features specially created elements such as extra wide drawers and customised storage, and a separate walk-in pantry (plus a separate utility room in the basement). The furniture has been made in flat veneered stained oak and the seamless worktops are in Corian. Cooking appliances are by Wolf and refrigeration is by Sub-Zero. The exposed brick wall of the kitchen matches the external finishes of the brickwork of the house which can be seen through the glass extension. To harmonise, a thick glass shelf has been added, masterminded by Gary Craig of Architectural Metalworkers. This is supported by a cantilevered steel frame, so while it may look deceptively light and subtle, “a serious amount of engineering has gone into it,” according to Hilary. Mowlem & Co also created further bespoke furnishings and installations, for a dressing room plus bathrooms and cloakrooms in other parts of the house. The complexity of the project to restore the entire house took over a year to finish. As the client was transferred to another team before the renovation was complete, the property is now on the market for £9 million.

We combined three different finish materials to give this small kitchen interest and create a modern graphic pattern. Stainless shelves intersected by walnut, one horizontal taupe acrylic top hinge wall cabinet all contribute to the unique layout. Panelizing the refrigerator allowed us to create a consistent mass of white to contrast the walnut.

With a striking, bold design that's both sleek and warm, this modern rustic black kitchen is a beautiful example of the best of both worlds. When our client from Wendover approached us to re-design their kitchen, they wanted something sleek and sophisticated but also comfortable and warm. We knew just what to do — design and build a contemporary yet cosy kitchen. This space is about clean, sleek lines. We've chosen Hacker Systemat cabinetry — sleek and sophisticated — in the colours Black and Oak. A touch of warm wood enhances the black units in the form of oak shelves and backsplash. The wooden accents also perfectly match the exposed ceiling trusses, creating a cohesive space. This modern, inviting space opens up to the garden through glass folding doors, allowing a seamless transition between indoors and out. The area has ample lighting from the garden coming through the glass doors, while the under-cabinet lighting adds to the overall ambience. The island is built with two types of worksurface: Dekton Laurent (a striking dark surface with gold veins) for cooking and Corian Designer White for eating. Lastly, the space is furnished with black Siemens appliances, which fit perfectly into the dark colour palette of the space.

The clients were looking to use this second home for entertaining friends and family, so it was critical to be able to comfortably host groups while still feeling intimate and maintaining privacy. DEANE designed an outdoor kitchen using exceptionally engineered and crafted polished and brushed stainless-steel outdoor cabinetry with a waterproof, weathertight case that was also insect/vermin-proof, ensuring performance in all conditions. The 16 linear feet of functional cooking and entertaining space houses a set of refrigeration drawers and icemaker, a built-in grill, full sink, trash & recycling receptacles, topped with Taj Mahal Quartzite countertops. DEANE collaborated with the general contractor, architect, and landscape architect to cohesively work with other crucial outdoor elements, which included an outdoor tv, spa, as well as separate seating and dining areas to create memorable times together.

This design boasts it's own private bar area which features a windsor grey quartz worktop and light grey cabinets, providing a practical use of the alcove by creating a seating area, and influenced by copper lighting and accessories, while the cabinetry hides a preparation area hidden by pocket doors. A tall bank of units boxed in by stud walls to create a unique built in look. The kitchen houses Neff slide and hide eye level ovens, a wine cooler, ceiling extraction and an induction hob.

Artichoke undertook a series of bespoke pieces for the owner of this London town house, including this sleek contemporary bespoke kitchen. The exterior surfaces of the furniture were made from oak; the grain was raked out to create a highly tactile surface. The island exterior was hand-polished lacquer. The worktop stone was made up of bevelled sections so that when assembled it took on the appearance of a much larger piece of stone. Primary materials: Hand-raked American oak, pigmented lacquer, Everest stone.

Tournant le dos à la terrasse malgré la porte-fenêtre qui y menait, l’agencement de la cuisine de ce bel appartement marseillais ne convenait plus aux propriétaires. La porte-fenêtre a été déplacée de façon à se retrouver au centre de la façade. Une fenêtre simple l’a remplacée, ce qui a permis d’installer l’évier devant et de profiter ainsi de la vue sur la terrasse.. Dissimulés derrière un habillage en plaqué chêne, le frigo et les rangements ont été rassemblés sur le mur opposé. C’est le contraste entre le papier peint à motifs et la brillance des zelliges qui apporte couleurs et fantaisie à cette cuisine devenue bien plus fonctionnelle pour une grande famille !. Our client wanted a kitchen that would effortlessly blend form and function, focusing on maximising space and providing practical storage solutions. They envisioned a space with plenty of drawers and pullouts, ensuring easy accessibility to all their kitchen essentials. Durability and long-lasting wear were paramount; they wanted a kitchen that would stand the test of time. But above all, they desired a sleek and minimalistic design, with all worktop appliances cleverly hidden away to create a clutter-free, easy-to-clean and maintain-friendly environment. Embracing a warm and feminine palette, we chose the Nobilia Sand - Anti-Fingerprint range to set the tone for this elegant kitchen. The soft, neutral shades create a soothing ambience, while the anti-fingerprint technology ensures that the surfaces stay pristine, even with daily use. To add a striking focal point to the kitchen, we incorporated a 20mm Trillium worktop supplied by Dekton. This bold statement piece adds character and offers excellent durability, making it an ideal choice for a kitchen that demands style and functionality. As for the appliances, we carefully selected the best in the market to complement the kitchen's design and meet our client's needs. The Siemens Ovens provide state-of-the-art cooking capabilities, while the Quooker Tap offers instant boiling water for ultimate convenience. The Elica-Nikola Tesla downdraft Hob delivers efficient ventilation and boasts a sleek and seamless appearance, perfectly aligning with the kitchen's handless design. To further enhance the kitchen's functionality, we incorporated some clever features, including sliding doors that lead to a hidden walk-in utility space, ensuring easy access to laundry essentials while keeping them discreetly tucked away. In line with our client's desire for practicality, we added a hidden pullout shelf on the worktop, specially designed to accommodate their heavy Thermomix, making it easily accessible when needed and neatly stowed away when not in use. The island, a central gathering spot, also serves as additional storage space with carefully crafted storage options on the back, making the most of every inch of the kitchen's layout. This kitchen project is a testament to our commitment to making our client's vision a reality. With a focus on space optimisation, practicality, and a feminine touch, this Nobilia kitchen has been transformed into a functional, elegant, and timeless space that our clients will enjoy for many years to come. In 2019, Interior designer Alexandra Brown approached Matter to design and make cabinetry for this penthouse apartment. The brief was to create a rich and opulent space, featuring a favoured smoked oak veneer. We looked to the Art Deco inspired features of the building and referenced its curved corners and newly installed aged brass detailing in our design. We combined the smoked oak veneer with cambia ash cladding in the kitchen and bar areas to complement the green and brown quartzite stone surfaces chosen by Alex perfectly. We then designed custom brass handles, shelving and a large-framed mirror as a centrepiece for the bar, all crafted impeccably by our friends at JN Custom Metal. Functionality and sustainability were the focus of our design, with hard-wearing charcoal Abet Laminati drawers and door fronts in the kitchen with custom J pull handles, Grass Nova ProScala drawers and Osmo oiled veneer that can be easily reconditioned over time.
