A historic home in the heart of inner-city Calgary was updated to a rustic farmhouse finish, integrating the existing structures and finishes into the new areas.

photo by Pedro Marti The goal of this renovation was to create a stair with a minimal footprint in order to maximize the usable space in this small apartment. The existing living room was divided in two and contained a steep ladder to access the second floor sleeping loft. The client wanted to create a single living space with a true staircase and to open up and preferably expand the old galley kitchen without taking away too much space from the living area. Our solution was to create a new stair that integrated with the kitchen cabinetry and dining area In order to not use up valuable floor area. The fourth tread of the stair continues to create a counter above additional kitchen storage and then cantilevers and wraps around the kitchen’s stone counters to create a dining area. The stair was custom fabricated in two parts. First a steel structure was created, this was then clad by a wood worker who constructed the kitchen cabinetry and made sure the stair integrated seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen. The treads have a floating appearance when looking from the living room, that along with the open rail helps to visually connect the kitchen to the rest of the space. The angle of the dining area table is informed by the existing angled wall at the entry hall, the line of the table is picked up on the other side of the kitchen by new floor to ceiling cabinetry that folds around the rear wall of the kitchen into the hallway creating additional storage within the hall.

Bridging the space between the Kitchen and Dining Rooms, the Butler's pantry includes space for china, glassware and wine storage. There is also a pantry cabinet for extra storage.

A peninsula with white quartz countertop replaces a wall that blocked the beautiful views. The peninsula adds dining and prep areas as well as storage space; the rounded front softens the edge and prevents a linear look. Bar stools in a faux ostrich texture performance fabric are embellished with steel nail heads. Overhead, we added a soffit to the cement ceiling for additional lighting and to conceal gas pipes.

This gorgeous dark grey shaker kitchen-diner is a fantastic living space in a terraced house. Compact Kitchen Our clients wanted an L-shaped kitchen that would work well in the compact space they had. They preferred to avoid doing any additional building work. As keen cooks, our clients wanted a space that would be a daily joy to be in. We designed and created the freestanding larder, which provides our clients with essential storage for their dry goods. Cooking a lot from scratch, this full height unit gives them an instant overview of all their ingredients. The open shelving on the other side of the kitchen makes the most of the shallow space between the worktop and the door leading to upstairs. A sustainable set of kitchen cabinets forms the base for the entire kitchen. These cabinets are super sustainable, as they are made from a special eco-board consisting of 100% recycled timber. They are glued and dowelled, and then set rigidly square in a press. Starting off square, they stay square - the perfect foundation for a solid kitchen. Guaranteed for 15 years, we expect them to last much longer. Exactly what you want when you're investing in a new kitchen. The longer a kitchen lasts, the more sustainable it is.
