The Balanced House was initially designed to investigate simple modular architecture which responded to the ruggedness of its Australian landscape setting. This dictated elevating the house above natural ground through the construction of a precast concrete base to accentuate the rise and fall of the landscape. The concrete base is then complimented with the sharp lines of Linelong metal cladding and provides a deliberate contrast to the soft landscapes that surround the property.

Renovations made this house bright, open, and modern. In addition to installing white oak flooring, we opened up and brightened the living space by removing a wall between the kitchen and family room and added large windows to the kitchen. In the family room, we custom made the built-ins with a clean design and ample storage. In the family room, we custom-made the built-ins. We also custom made the laundry room cubbies, using shiplap that we painted light blue. Rudloff Custom Builders has won Best of Houzz for Customer Service in 2014, 2015 2016, 2017 and 2019. An original Sandy Cohen design mid-century house in Laurelhurst neighborhood in Seattle. The house was originally built for illustrator Irwin Caplan, known for the "Famous Last Words" comic strip in the Saturday Evening Post. The residence was recently bought from Caplan’s estate by new owners, who found that it ultimately needed both cosmetic and functional upgrades.
