In a vast natural landscape, the formal design of intentionally landscaped beds often jars, visually. This Client came from Lake Forest, Illinois, the land of gentrified old world landscapes. Here in the Rockies, she left behind her corporate career to immerse herself in horses, art and a new life lived in connection with family and Nature. She wanted a simple landscape that spoke to these new desires. For this project, we crafted opportunities for Nature to weave its way back into the landscape. The circle drive is the first whiff of this. Designed around a gnarled cedar, the spirit of this entire ranch, we simplified the plant palette, bringing in native and regionally adapted grasses and wildflowers. And that's it! A custom-cut piece of glass tops a Saarinen tulip table base framed by a curvaceous silk-velvet settee and a wood bench stands in place of a conventional dining set in the dining area. “I didn’t want the clutter of a lot of chairs” Jane says. “It would have interfered with the calm of the room.” Timber bamboo, lustrous overscale Vietnamese pottery, a trio of sparkling Thai mirrors, and nearly a dozen candles interspersed with smooth dark stones enhance the dining area’s grown-up appeal.

This 1930's small kitchen was in need of expansion. It was closed off to the rest of the house and didn't fit with the modern appliances. Removing a wall and extending the kitchen into the next room created an inviting space open to the dining and family room. Replacing the white painted cabinets with natural white oak custom cabinets gave it a contemporary look with classic touches of marble patterned quartz and handmade subway tile backsplash. The open shelving keeps everyday dishes within easy reach and a place to display artwork.
