Paragon Stairs
A floating staircase is a perfect alternative to a bulky traditional stair frame. It allows light to fill the space and keep the floorplan open.

Housed atop a sand dune overlooking a crescent shaped beach, this updated innovative shingle style home replaced an existing vacation home our clients purchased a number of years ago. Significantly upgrading what was previously there, the single characteristic they wanted to maintain was a curved glass element that made the home distinctly identifiable from the beach. The height of the dune is unique for the area and well above flood plane which permits living space on all three levels of the home. Choreographed to fit within the natural landscape, guests entering the home from the front porch are immediately greeted with stunning views of the ocean. Delicate wood paneling and textural details are illuminated by abundant natural light flooding the home. East and West facing stairs are greeted with a wash of sunlight in the morning and evening, illuminating paths to breakfast and returning to rest. Photo by Kelly Ferguson

The design for this client’s “dream house on the water” capitalizes on every opportunity to incorporate views of the Long Island Sound within the home. The placement and expanse of the fir windows and sliding doors underscore the water’s proximity. The interior gathering space spills out onto the raised outdoor deck and lap pool overlooking the seawall. Reducing the house’s carbon footprint is another priority, accomplished by generating renewable energy on site. The precise angle of the house on the property is calculated for optimal solar energy production by the rooftop photovoltaic panels and a geothermal system installed under the driveway provides heating and cooling for the house.
Due to the fact that the site is located on a floodplain, the ground floor of the house is raised and no basement is allowed. This presents a challenge in terms of carving out enough storage space in the main house that one might normally relegate to a basement. Rooms are efficiently sized and serve multiple functions and storage is built-in wherever possible.

Minimalistic entry foyer features a three-story vertical space allowing for birds eye view of the space from floors above. Exotic Brazilian ipe wood clad cantilevered floating stairs seem to be suspended in space and extend all three floors of the residence while LED thread lighting creates soothing glow lifting up the threads.
Stainless steel vertical tension bars spanning the entire height of the stairwell provide stability and safety.
