Kitchen of the Week: A Warm Contemporary Style With Bold Marble
A designer found on Houzz creates a timeless look with inviting wood cabinets and a dramatic countertop and backsplash

When reading an article on Houzz about a remodeled San Francisco kitchen, this couple instantly fell in love with the space’s contemporary style, warm wood cabinets and bold backsplash. It was just the style they were looking for to update the aging black-and-white kitchen in their Monterey Colonial-style home.
But the couple went beyond just taking inspiration from the photos and article. They reached out to Form + Field, the design firm on Houzz responsible for the look they loved, and hired its design team to create something similarly special for them. The team designed custom white oak cabinets with flat-panel fronts and matte black hardware that, along with refinished oak flooring, bring a generous amount of warmth and contemporary style to the kitchen. And slabs of polished marble with lilac veining add dramatic strokes to the backsplash and the updated island top, giving the couple the bold vibe they were looking to emulate.

Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple with two teenage sons
Location: Berkeley, California
Size: 278 square feet (26 square meters), including banquette dining area
Designers: Christine Lin and Gabrielle Barnard-Eads of Form + Field
Before: Functionally, the former kitchen worked. But several design irritations had begun to weigh on the couple. They’d remodeled the space 20 years before, and the cabinets had seen better days. Plus, despite plenty of cabinet boxes, the cabinets didn’t offer sufficient storage, resulting in a lot of clutter strewn about the countertops. “When we walked into the kitchen, I realized right away they have a lot of stuff and need more storage,” says designer Gabrielle Barnard-Eads of Form + Field.
The couple had also grown tired of the standard white cabinets and gray granite countertops. And the black painted island had its fair share of scuff marks. The sink sitting asymmetrically below the window was another frustrating detail.
On the plus side, the kitchen had a pro-style range and a large stainless steel refrigerator that the homeowners wanted to keep, as well as oak flooring that needed refinishing.

On the plus side, the kitchen had a pro-style range and a large stainless steel refrigerator that the homeowners wanted to keep, as well as oak flooring that needed refinishing.
After: Barnard-Eads stripped back the kitchen components. “We didn’t change any of the walls,” she says. “We did rework some plumbing and electrical.”
She also shifted the location of the sink and range a few inches and relocated the refrigerator across the kitchen (partially visible at left), a key change that created space for a new pantry cabinet. “The refrigerator fits on that wall perfectly,” Barnard-Eads says.
Slabs of polished marble for the island countertop and backsplash feature dramatic lilac veining. “We decided to go to a stone yard and look at slabs,” Barnard-Eads says. “When we were walking around, this was the color that resonated with the homeowner. We then went on a hunt and found the slabs with the right veining. With the dramatic veining on the stone, we wanted everything else to be soft and quiet in the kitchen.”
That includes the custom flat-panel white oak cabinetry, which goes all the way to the ceiling to maximize storage. Matte black pulls and T-bar knobs and other black details add touches of drama. “The hardware decision was something we went back and forth about,” Barnard-Eads says. “We thought about finger pulls but decided to go with the hardware route for durability. We had already picked lighting fixtures with matte black and went that direction to keep the look clean.”

The new white oak island measures about 3 by 5 feet. “The size of the island we created is much more proportional to the space,” Barnard-Eads says. “And since they cook a lot, we wanted to provide more space for prep work.”
Walnut counter stools have custom seat cushions upholstered in a vintage blue fade-resistant acrylic fabric. “The clients love the color blue, and the entire color palette we created with the purples and the blues is very cohesive,” Barnard-Eads says. The stools complement the handcrafted black walnut sconces over the windows.
Over the island, two handmade stoneware mini pendant lights are dipped in a navy blue and mushroom glaze and have a perforated surface that adds texture to the room.

Barnard-Eads also shifted the couple’s existing gas range a few inches and created a discreet custom hood that blends in with the cabinetry. “We wanted the hood to go away,” she says. “With the beauty of the wood, it felt better to have it not stand out. We made it quiet and not overly designed.” A lower cabinet to the right of the range stores cutting boards and baking sheets. Matte white ultracompact composite perimeter countertops offer a clean counterpoint to the bold marble.

The interior side of the island features six soft-close drawers. “The top drawers have dividers for knives and tools for prep work,” Barnard-Eads says.
A second paneled trash pullout sits to the lower right of the window at the back of this photo. “They do two types of recycling in this family,” Barnard-Eads says. “The pullout next to the sink has the larger bin for waste and composting, while this smaller one is for recycling.”

Before: Here’s another look at the former kitchen. Worn paint is visible on the island. Beyond, in a corner by a back door, stood the fridge. “If someone was using the fridge and had the fridge doors open, it blocked access to the back door,” Barnard-Eads says. The homeowners wanted to keep the breakfast nook but give it a fresh look.
After: With the fridge moved to another area of the kitchen, Barnard-Eads created this custom pantry cabinet with doors that slide in when open. “The pantry cabinet has a microwave on a shelf, storage for countertop appliances and shelving with pullouts for dry goods,” she says.

Barnard-Eads updated the banquette with an easy-care purple outdoor fabric. The new custom white oak dining table with natural stain has a rectangular top and pedestal base. Above it hangs a handcrafted 20-inch pendant light with smoked glass shade.

This floor plan of the new kitchen shows the user-friendly layout of the fridge (bottom center), sink (bottom left), range (top left) and island (center). “I’m proud of the overall design of the kitchen because it’s sophisticated and beautiful and represents the style of the clients,” Barnard-Eads says. “It was about elevating the design and keeping the lines very clean.”
