Kitchen of the Week: Green and Earth Tones Nod to Nature
Green cabinets, a custom wood range hood and a new island take this kitchen from bland to sublime

Designer Lisa Rossman describes the previous kitchen in this Orange County, California, home as a blank slate that was calling out for some color and life. The young couple who purchased the home are recent East Coast transplants who were eager to draw in the lush greens and earth tones visible from their kitchen windows to create a space that feels warm and inviting.
By adding new cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling, a custom wood range hood with a geometric pattern and a new island that seats four and has integrated food and water bowls for their dog, this remodeled kitchen is truly the heart of the home.

Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple with two young kids and a dog
Location: Orange County, California
Size: About 400 square feet (37 square meters)
Designer: Lisa Rossman of LL Design Co.
Builder: Well Done Building & Design
Before: The previous kitchen had been renovated a few years earlier and featured granite countertops, white cabinets with soffits above the uppers, engineered wood floors and an island that seated two.
“There was nothing wrong with the previous kitchen, but it was pretty uninspiring,” Rossman says. “And the island wasn’t large enough for the whole family to use for informal meals.”

After: The engineered wood floors remain, but nearly every other surface is new. Marble-look engineered quartz now features on the countertops, backsplash and island. The custom island has cabinets on one end and an integrated table on the other that comfortably seats the couple and their two children.
All of the new cabinets have flat-panel doors and brass hardware that pops against the light green color (Retreat by Sherwin-Williams).
A pair of terra-cotta pendant lights above the island and four counter stools with leather seats bring in warm earth tones.

The back side of the island has a custom dog station with a spot for food and water bowls. The back wall of the station is covered in recycled aggregate tile with a patterned screen print.
“I recommend a built-in food and water station for all my clients with dogs,” Rossman says. “It’s so much neater than having bowls on the floor that are easy to knock over.”

The new six-burner gas range is the only visible appliance in the new space, as the refrigerator and dishwasher are covered behind custom panels.
The custom range hood is covered in strips of wood laid in a geometric pattern inspired by a driveway gate the designer saw during an evening stroll. “I was trying to think of an interesting pattern for the hood to make it stand out,” Rossman says. “When I saw this pattern on the gate, I knew it would be perfect for the hood.”

Rossman had the soffits removed so the new cabinets could go all the way up to the ceiling. The taller cabinets provide more storage, which allowed the designer to remove some cabinets in favor of a pair of floating wood shelves.
“The shelves provide a spot to add some personality with accents and potted plants,” she says.

Before: The previous kitchen featured a pair of wall ovens and a stainless steel refrigerator on one wall. A solid door (on the left side of the photo) opened to a small pantry closet.
After: The wall ovens were removed in favor of the new gas range. The new refrigerator is hidden behind custom door panels.
Rossman ripped out the pantry closet to make room for more upper cabinets, a built-in wine refrigerator and custom wine storage. “Having so many doors in the kitchen made the space feel too fussy,” she says.
