This adorable couple has spent a lifetime making other peoples homes around San Diego feel special through their inspired and delightful placement of natural plants for interior, creating each space in which they live, work, and play. They have also made their home an oasis where anyone visiting feels comfortable and yet excited by all the beautiful flowers and planting everywhere around their home. We were honored to be selected to help Andrea and Winston bring the heart of their home to life. When you have waited for years to have the kitchen of your dreams you want everything you could have possibility thought about. One thing the client wanted was when she walked into the front door of your home was to feel like she was not looking into her kitchen. We achieved that by creating a breakfast bar section with a distressed grayish green cabinetry.

The new porch was insulated and incorporated into the overall space. The kitchen remodel was part of a whole house remodel so new quarter sawn oak flooring, a vaulted ceiling, windows and skylights were added. A large calcutta marble topped island takes center stage. It houses a 5’ galley workstation - a sink that provides a convenient spot for prepping, serving, entertaining and clean up. A 36” induction cooktop is located directly across from the island for easy access. Two appliance garages on either side of the cooktop house small appliances that are used on a daily basis. Honeycomb tile by Ann Sacks and open shelving along the cooktop wall add an interesting focal point to the room. Antique mirrored glass faces the storage unit housing dry goods and a beverage center. “I chose details for the space that had a bit of a mid-century vibe that would work well with what was originally a 1950s ranch. Along the way a previous owner added a 2nd floor making it more of a Cape Cod style home, a few eclectic details felt appropriate”, adds Klimala. The wall opposite the cooktop houses a full size fridge, freezer, double oven, coffee machine and microwave. “There is a lot of functionality going on along that wall”, adds Klimala. A small pull out countertop below the coffee machine provides a spot for hot items coming out of the ovens. The rooms creamy cabinetry is accented by quartersawn white oak at the island and wrapped ceiling beam. The golden tones are repeated in the antique brass light fixtures. “This is the second kitchen I’ve had the opportunity to design for myself. My taste has gotten a little less traditional over the years, and although I’m still a traditionalist at heart, I had some fun with this kitchen and took some chances. The kitchen is super functional, easy to keep clean and has lots of storage to tuck things away when I’m done using them. The casual dining room is fabulous and is proving to be a great spot to linger after dinner. A full kitchen remodel where the clients contractor demoed this space back to the bear bones of this mid-century home to create this new, bright open kitchen.

Slight change in this floor plan made a big difference. Refrigerator replaced the pantry which replaced a desk while stealing space from the laundry room behind it. This gave way to a lot of counter-space and nice symmetry on the main wall. Custom cabinetry in a custom client selected color, 3D style subway tile, and brass finishes are a few special features in this remodel.

Flooded with natural light, this kitchen now accommodates multiple pets & cooks. The work flow was improved by eliminating an existing peninsula & relocating the sink to the corner, creating three major work areas in the kitchen. The original layout had the kitchen separated from the dining room with a doorway. We completely reconfigured the space by removing the wall to the dining room and designed the kitchen, dining room and kitchen eating area as an integrated and coordinated space. The cabinetry facing the dining room has two built in buffets and china cabinets. On the far side of the kitchen where the kitchen eating areas is we designed built in coat closets with pantry storage. Hardwood flooring was installed to match the existing flooring in the living room delivering a comfortable and integrated flow throughout the main level of the home.

This kitchen went from cramped and dark to bright and open! Knocking down the wall between the old dining room and kitchen made a huge difference. We were able to create a larger kitchen and with an island but most importantly, a red island. Having the red island was important to the home owner and to compliment it we did a geometric architecture backsplash to help bringing in dimension. We tied in their existing floors and re stained the main floor. Surprisingly after the renovation the dining room table never moved from its original spot! All this space needed was to remove the existing wall to a now endless amount of memories this open concept will create.
