THE SETUP Senior Designer Diana Burton’s client loved her sixties-era home – it just needed some work. The cozy galley kitchen was narrow and mostly closed off from the family room. A pass-through window served as a limited pipeline for treats and chatter. The appliances were failing, too. It was simply time for an overhaul. Design Objectives: Remove load bearing wall and open kitchen to the family room Omit large unused fireplace in family room Increase work surfaces and overall storage solutions Dedicated small countertop appliance storage Seating for 3 or 4 at island Add pantry storage Offer solution for lack of mudroom Upgrade all appliances THE REMODEL Design Challenges: Finding a location to hide structural support for new beam Reworking awkward configuration of existing walls Adding a walk-in pantry Creating mudroom storage Allowing room for large sectional in family room Design Solutions: Add a discreet column by the fridge to hide essential support Flush out wall by bath to be even with the range wall, where the new walk in pantry exists Use void space behind new wall for large appliance garage Create combination walk in pantry/mudroom by adding bench with shoe storage and hooks Maintain island depth for comfortable seating without infringing on space for the sectional THE RENEWED SPACE This cramped, dated kitchen has a new lease on life! Opening it to the family room dramatically transformed the space. Diana’s client now has plenty of storage, a big island for food prep, and an open-concept space that’s perfect for entertaining and hanging out with friends and family.

This elegant kitchen resides in the suburbs of Weston, FL. It showcases a beautiful juxtaposition between the dark and light materials. The dark walnut finish on the cabinets, hood, ceiling, shelving and pantry door adds warmth to the white space. This striking contrast adds life to the scene. Moreover, the top shelf and under cabinet lighting also add an inviting element that gives the kitchen a homey atmosphere.

Our clients wanted to make the most of space so we gutted the home and rebuilt the inside to create a functional and kid-friendly home with timeless style. Our clients’ vision was clear: They wanted a warm and timeless design that was easy to clean and maintain with two-active boys. “It’s not unusual for our friends and family to drop past unannounced any day of the week. And we love it!” They told us during our initial Design Therapy Sesh. We knew immediately what she meant - we have an open-door policy with our families, too! Which was why we consciously created living spaces that were open, inviting and welcoming. Now, the only problem our clients would have would be convincing their guests to leave! This timeless kitchen uses neutral grey, white and dark wood tones to create a welcoming space for all. Guests are welcomed through the trimmed arched opening with paneling details. The architectural and cabinetry details elevate the kitchen to bring elegance and interest. The shaker style cabinet fronts are recessed into the cabinetry fronts. Glass front upper cabinets add visual interest and depth to the space. The black lights pop out against the grey cabinets. The dark wood island contrasts with the white countertops and light gray cabinets and also grounds the space. The island also features recessed paneling and base moulding for that classic feel. The light wood floors are of white oak and add warmth to the space. Grey leather-like low back bar stools repeat the gray of the cabinets & fit the height of the island. The island allows 5 people to sit on 2 sides. The white quartz backsplash with grey veining is subtly dramatic behind the stove. Countertop space is provided on both sides of the oven. The hood vent for the stove is integrated seamlessly into the cabinetry for a clean look. The upper cabinets extend down to rest on the counters. This provides concealed storage easily at reach. The kitchen is open to the living area, yet is defined by a large cased opening. The beautiful cabinetry was crafted by JEM Woodworking.
