This expansive Victorian had tremendous historic charm but hadn’t seen a kitchen renovation since the 1950s. The homeowners wanted to take advantage of their views of the backyard and raised the roof and pushed the kitchen into the back of the house, where expansive windows could allow southern light into the kitchen all day. A warm historic gray/beige was chosen for the cabinetry, which was contrasted with character oak cabinetry on the appliance wall and bar in a modern chevron detail. The client hired Swati Goorha Designs after they downsized from a 5 bedroom house to a smaller fixer-upper in Scotch Plains NJ. The main pain point of the house was an awkward circulation flow and a tiny dated kitchen. Our clients love cooking and entertain often. The small kitchen was crowded with just two people in it, lacked ample prep space and storage. Additionally, there was no direct access to the kitchen from the main entrance. In order to get to the “Sitting room” the clients had to circulate through a tiny powder room off of the entry. The client had to circulate through the Living room, the formal Dining Room, to finally arrive at the Kitchen. The entire space was awkward, choppy and dark. We assessed the existing space, our clients needs and wants, and designed a utilitarian kitchen to fit the client’s lifestyle, their entertaining habits, and their aesthetic sensibilities. We knocked down the wall between the kitchen and the family room to open the area, and made the entire space into one large kitchen. We designed an unusual custom angled island to maximize the use of space without infringing the circulation or the usability of the kitchen. The island can now accommodate 3-4 people for an intimate dinner or function as a food setup area for larger parties. The island also provides extra storage. We used dark kitchen cabinets with light backsplash, countertops, and floor to brighten the space and hide the inevitable pet hair from clients four dogs. We moved the Dining Room into the earlier Sitting room. In order to improve the circulation in the home, we closed the entry through the powder room and knocked out a coat closet. This allowed direct access to the kitchen and created a more open and easy flowing space. Now the entire house is a bright, light-filled space, with natural light and open circulation. Our client’s needs and wants have been satisfied!

Beautiful kitchen with elements of both "Transitional" & "Modern Farmhouse" design. White shaker kitchen cabinets with contrasting espresso island set the tone of the overall design. Add the marble backsplash from base to ceiling along the whole back wall, the top row of glass doors on the top and the farmhouse sink and we are leaning toward "Farmhouse." The light wood engineered floors, stainless steel appliances and brass hardware are all "Transitional" design elements. Again, the end result is a great combination of both genres. Enjoy!

Mowlem & CoMowlem & Co
Mowlem& Co: Virtuoso kitchen This award-winning kitchen by Julia Brown effortlessly combines the classic with the contemporary, through the application of thoughtful styling and a clever use of colour. The timeless framed, shaker-style furniture is hand-painted in Farrow & Ball’s Railings, making a striking contrast with use of a Caesarstone worktop in raw concrete to the island unit and the beautiful Carrara Gioia marble on the splashback. There’s an industrial quality to the chocolate bronze metal handles that are recessed into the furniture doors, and the Siemens ovens are discreetly integrated to the island, which is raised on robust legs for a nod to the chic freestanding look. The design maximises both working space and opportunities for social interaction, with storage optimised by the extra height wall units that take advantage of the period property’s high ceilings. Pendant lamps, stylish stools and a herringbone white-washed Oak wooden floor add the perfect finishing touches.

You’d never know by looking at this stunning cottage that the project began by raising the entire home six feet above the foundation. The Birchwood field team used their expertise to carefully lift the home in order to pour an entirely new foundation. With the base of the home secure, our craftsmen moved indoors to remodel the home’s kitchen and bathrooms. The sleek kitchen features gray, custom made inlay cabinetry that brings out the detail in the one of a kind quartz countertop. A glitzy marble tile backsplash completes the contemporary styled kitchen. Photo credit: Phoenix Photographic
