The vaulted ceiling, structural beam in the living room and openings for the upper and lower levels created many challenges for the new kitchen design. We enclosed the lower level entry with partition walls, creating an entry to that staircase with a frosted glass door and walk-in pantry in the new kitchen area. The pantry gave the illusion of a symmetrical interior, but actually hides that partition. Additionally, the pantry opening creates the lines for the kitchen with dual islands. On the opposite end is the cooking area, surrounded by Thermador refrigerator and freezer towers. Flattening out the ceiling in the foyer area and adding custom shelving gives the foyer its own space, leaving the remainder for a harvest table and sitting area. Alicia Gbur Photography

In this Okemos kitchen design, a striking black and white color scheme combines with eye-catching tile details and metallic accents to create a stunning, one-of-a-kind kitchen. The Design-Craft frameless cabinetry incorporates white cabinets in the main cooking area with contrasting black floor to ceiling cabinets on the adjacent wall and black island cabinetry. ENVI Calacatta Vittoria quartz countertop and backsplash beautifully accents the cabinet design, including a stunning waterfall edge on the island. The opposite wall incorporates a beverage center with an undercounter refrigerator, black framed glass front upper cabinets, open storage, and a unique Terra Bella marble tile backsplash in white with gold accents. Metallic accents feature throughout this kitchen design including two-tone Top Knobs cabinet hardware, gold lantern pendants over the island, white barstools with gold legs, and GE Cafe Series appliances in stainless with gold handles. The range hood creates a design focal point in black and gold.

Due to the river view from the kitchen's bay window, designers move the stove's metal ventilation hood -- originally located over an island in the center of the kitchen -- and place a stainless hood on the kitchen's back wall. They add a second station -- a serving island -- in a medium-toned mahogany. They contrast the mahogany with dark, ebony-stained cabinetry on the island nearest the stove. Delicatus granite is used for the countertops, except the serving island, which employs black absolute. This pulls the deep ebony colors into the room's central area. Pineapple House accessorizes the serving islands’ exposed shelves with things like coffee table books instead of kitchen-related items since it faces the family room. The designers increase storage with a four-door pantry with a break-front design and embed a television on its exterior. A floor-to-ceiling wine chiller and storage/display is created in the corner. This homeowner came to us with her basic design ready for us to execute for her kitchen, but also asked us to design and update her entry, sunroom and fireplace. Her kitchen was 80’s standard builder grade cabinetry and laminate countertops and she had a knee wall separating her kitchen from the family room. We removed that wall and installed a custom cabinetry buffet to complement the cabinetry of the kitchen, allowing for access from all sides. We removed a desk area in the kitchen and converted it to a closed organization station complete with a charging station for phones and computers. Calcutta Quartzite countertops were used throughout and continued seamlessly up the walls as a backsplash to create a wow factor. We converted a closet into a pantry cabinet, and new stainless appliances, including a microwave drawer completed this renovation. Additionally, we updated her sunroom by removing the “popcorn” textured ceiling and gave it a fresh updated coat of paint. We installed 12x24 tile floor giving the room a simple classic transformation. Finally, we renewed the fireplace area, by building a custom mantle and adding wood paneling and trim to soften the marble fireplace face and a simple coat of paint in the entry and a new chandelier brought a lighter and fresher impact upon entering the home.

This beautiful yet highly functional space was remodeled for a busy, active family. Flush ceiling beams joined two rooms, and the back wall was extended out six feet to create a new, open layout with areas for cooking, dining, and entertaining. The homeowner is a decorator with a vision for the new kitchen that leverages low-maintenance materials with modern, clean lines. Durable Quartz countertops and full-height slab backsplash sit atop white overlay cabinets around the perimeter, with angled shaker doors and matte brass hardware adding polish. There is a functional “working” island for cooking, storage, and an integrated microwave, as well as a second waterfall-edge island delineated for seating. A soft slate black was chosen for the bases of both islands to ground the center of the space and set them apart from the perimeter. The custom stainless-steel hood features “Cartier” screws detailing matte brass accents and anchors the Wolf 48” dual fuel range. A new window, framed by glass display cabinets, adds brightness along the rear wall, with dark herringbone floors creating a solid presence throughout the space.

The owner of this home wanted a kitchen that would function well for two people working together while incorporated both traditional and non traditional materials, and reflect a relaxed coastal lifestyle. This great kitchen was featured in the October 2013 CH2 Magazine article on “the Ultimate Kitchen”.

Two islands: dubbed working island & party island helped to divide and conquer this kitchen layout. Storage, built-in appliances, walnut cabinet interiors, brass fixtures all help to complete this custom kitchen.

Looking for a tile that fit the elongated and luxurious aesthetic of the rest of the space, the client opted for a beautiful custom designed herringbone glass tile for their backsplash. With the herringbone pattern pointing upwards, the tile brings attention to the verticality of the space, accentuating the height of the room, all while increasing comfort.

After living in downtown Chicago their whole lives, these clients were ready for a change of pace. So, they retired and purchased a home near the lake, of course! They both love to cook, and were excited to host big family gatherings. In other words, a full kitchen remodel was in order. The full bath on the main level also needed a complete overhaul. Design Objectives: -Open the kitchen to adjacent family room to create a better space for entertaining -Upgrade appliances and ventilation -Plenty of storage for an extensive collection of cookware and small appliances -Create a dedicated space for baking and pizza making Include a large island for gathering -Select finishes that bring the outdoors in -Create a classic beach vibe with NO white cabinetry! Include tile flooring to flow from laundry room to bathroom to kitchen, while complementing existing hardwood floors -Create direct access to bathroom from laundry room (so family coming from the beach don’t track sand throughout the house) Design Challenges: -Omitting wall between kitchen and family room left very little wall space for cabinetry and appliances -Providing plenty of storage and work surfaces for avid cooks/bakers -Replace existing hardwood with stone floor tile that complements existing hardwood floors as well as cabinetry finishes Design Solutions: -Creating two islands was a key design decision. The large island is for cooking and gathering. The smaller island is for baking and pizza making -Placing the range in the island created a very effective layout for this kitchen -Adding a pocket door from the bath to the laundry room created a direct path for sandy kids and adults alike THE RENEWED KITCHEN AND MORE The finished space feels open and welcoming for the homeowners, their friends and family. The kitchen functions as well for two as it does for a crowd.
