The Cherry Road project is a humble yet striking example of how small changes can have a big impact. A meaningful project as the final room to be renovated in this house, thus our completion aligned with the family’s move-in. The kitchen posed a number of problems the design worked to remedy. Such as an existing window oriented the room towards a neighboring driveway. The initial design move sought to reorganize the space internally, focusing the view from the sink back through the house to the pool and courtyard beyond. This simple repositioning allowed the range to center on the opposite wall, flanked by two windows that reduce direct views to the driveway while increasing the natural light of the space. Opposite that opening to the dining room, we created a new custom hutch that has the upper doors bypass doors incorporate an antique mirror, then led they magnified the light and view opposite side of the room. The ceilings we were confined to eight foot four, so we wanted to create as much verticality as possible. All the cabinetry was designed to go to the ceiling, incorporating a simple coat mold at the ceiling. The west wall of the kitchen is primarily floor-to-ceiling storage behind paneled doors. So the refrigeration and freezers are fully integrated. The island has a custom steel base with hammered legs, with a natural wax finish on it. The top is soapstone and incorporates an integral drain board in the kitchen sink. We did custom bar stools with steel bases and upholstered seats. At the range, we incorporated stainless steel countertops to integrate with the range itself, to make that more seamless flow. The edge detail is historic from the 1930s. There is a concealed sort of office for the homeowner behind custom, bi-folding panel doors. So it can be closed and totally concealed, or opened up and engaged with the kitchen. In the office area, which was a former pantry, we repurposed a granite marble top that was on the former island. Then the walls have a grass cloth wall covering, which is pinnable, so the homeowner can display photographs, calendars, and schedules.

Small Galley kitchen in Sonoma, CA. This little budget job was done with Ikea cabinets that were customized to fit the space (ie, stacked upper cabinets to create a shallow pantry). The bright red range creates a focal point while open shelves offer upper storage without invading the small space.

For this 2-bedroom condo in a classic Brooklyn brownstone, Cheung Showman Architects worked with the client to introduce a variety of material textures to a space previously characterized by plaster molding. Reclaimed wood floors, shelves made of old joists, and painted brick serve to change the feeling of 'history' in the apartment, supplementing the original molding's sharp classical lines with natural variation and layering over time.

This project is new construction located in Hinsdale, Illinois. The scope included the kitchen, butler’s pantry, and mudroom. The clients are on the verge of being empty nesters and so they decided to right size. They came from a far more traditional home, and they were open to things outside of their comfort zone. O’Brien Harris Cabinetry in Chicago (OBH) collaborated on the project with the design team but especially with the builder from J. Jordan Homes. The architecture of this home is interesting and defined by large floor to ceiling windows. This created a challenge in the kitchen finding wall space for large appliances. “In essence we only had one wall and so we chose to orient the cooking on that wall. That single wall is defined on the left by a window and on the right by the mudroom. That left us with another challenge – where to place the ovens and refrigerator. We then created a vertically clad wall disguising appliances which floats in between the kitchen and dining room”, says Laura O’Brien. The room is defined by interior transom windows and a peninsula was created between the kitchen and the casual dining for separation but also for added storage. To keep it light and open a transparent brass and glass shelving was designed for dishes and glassware located above the peninsula. The butler’s pantry is located behind the kitchen and between the dining room and a lg exterior window to front of the home. Its main function is to house additional appliances. Au cœur du 16ème arrondissement, ce 2 pièces parisien datant des années 30 ne demandait qu’à révéler son charme potentiel. La direction artistique du projet, en cohérence avec l’univers de notre cliente s’est vite portée sur des teintes pastel. Le parti pris coloriel s’affiche dans la cuisine, où la couleur nude a été choisie pour les façades. A la couleur nude, s’oppose un vert nordique que l’on trouve en mineur côté cuisine et de façon majeure dans le salon et le séjour. Les bibliothèques existantes qui se font face, se sont parées d’une teinte bleu-vert dont seul Farrow and Ball a le secret. Le mix de mobilier ancien et contemporain de la cliente est venu sublimer le charme de ce lieu.
