Some spaces are best understood before and after. Our Carytown Kitchen project demonstrates how a small space can be transformed for minimal expense. First and foremost was maximizing space. With only 9 sf of built-in counter space we understood these work surfaces needed to be kept free of small appliances and clutter - and that meant extra storage. The introduction of high wall cabinets provides much needed storage for occasional use equipment and helps keep everything dust-free in the process. Photograph by Stephen Barling.

Most unique design feature is the flat panel doors with wood grain facing in the same direction throughout the kitchen. Other noteworthy design features are the Soapstone counter tops and back splash, and the stainless steel portion of the back splash used above the range and behind the vent hood. Tile floors mimic the look of wood, and are a fairly new and trendy material option.

The area where you see the stove was once a large volume housing a powder room and storage closet. It made the space feel much smaller, and it confined the kitchen to the back galley. By relocating that, we could make room for a kitchen that's truly a part of the living area. The back galley is where one finds the refrigerator and ample storage.

My clients had the idea of putting a pass through to their living room area. My stone fabricator made a soapstone counter for the pass through. The stone was cut to fit so we could have the wood trim fit perfectly to the stone. Beautiful and functional.

This Dutch Renaissance Revival style Brownstone located in a historic district of the Crown heights neighborhood of Brooklyn was built in 1899. The brownstone was converted to a boarding house in the 1950’s and experienced many years of neglect which made much of the interior detailing unsalvageable with the exception of the stairwell. Therefore the new owners decided to gut renovate the majority of the home, converting it into a four family home. The bottom two units are owner occupied, the design of each includes common elements yet also reflects the style of each owner. Both units have modern kitchens with new high end appliances and stone countertops. They both have had the original wood paneling restored or repaired and both feature large open bathrooms with freestanding tubs, marble slab walls and radiant heated concrete floors. The garden apartment features an open living/dining area that flows through the kitchen to get to the outdoor space. In the kitchen and living room feature large steel French doors which serve to bring the outdoors in. The garden was fully renovated and features a deck with a pergola. Other unique features of this apartment include a modern custom crown molding, a bright geometric tiled fireplace and the labyrinth wallpaper in the powder room. The upper two floors were designed as rental units and feature open kitchens/living areas, exposed brick walls and white subway tiled bathrooms.

The cabinet at the left shields the kitchen somewhat from the family room. The cabinet has four drawers for personal storage--one for each family member--that contain outlets for charging devices.
