Set in the suburbs of Dallas, this custom-built home has great bones, but it's southern-traditional style and décor did not fit the taste of its new homeowners. Family spaces and bedrooms were curated to allow for transition as the family grows. Unpretentious and inviting, these spaces better suit their lifestyle. The living room was updated with refreshing, high-contrast paint, and modern lighting. A low-rise and deep seat sectional allows for lounging, cuddling, as well as pillow fort making. Toys are out of site in large wicker baskets, and fragile decorative objects are placed high on shelves, making this cozy space perfect for entertaining and playing.

In the divide between the kitchen and family room, we built storage into the buffet. We applied moulding to the columns for an updated and clean look. Sleek and contemporary, this beautiful home is located in Villanova, PA. Blue, white and gold are the palette of this transitional design. With custom touches and an emphasis on flow and an open floor plan, the renovation included the kitchen, family room, butler’s pantry, mudroom, two powder rooms and floors. This Upper East Side prewar interior was specifically designed as a guest apartment for friends and family to stay for long periods of time. They wanted their guests to feel like home while staying in the city. Our criteria was that it had to be functional while remaining tailored, sophisticated and inviting. The space was rather dark so we opted for wallcoverings and paint colors that were soft, textural and exuded contrast. Our design was to completely renovate the living room, bathroom and master bedroom/sitting area. The kitchen was cosmetic with floor stain, paint, hardware and lighting. Grey, taupe, white and black were accents in the living room and created a friendly environment. This room also had to function as a guest room therefore a pullout sofa covered in a Lee Jofa linen was the perfect choice. The Bedroom has a soft palate which is extremely welcoming with touches of silver and pale grey. The hints of peacock blue and brown transform the space completely and work well with the pheasant mirror above the bed. There is also a reading nook where our star Winston occasionally takes naps when he returns from his runs in Central Park. Photo Jane Beiles

The fireplace is simplistic with sophisticated details. Large format slate tiles were hand selected for the right balance of color in this highly variable stone. The beam from which the mantle was built is reclaimed from an old Barnum & Bailey barn and refinished by a local craftsman who also added the locally picked rail road ties to complete the design. To give the space more dimension, we furred out the surrounding area on which the slate was applied to create this inset of leathered black granite. The granite texture pulls in the hand forged iron on the doors and iron pegs on the beam. The room was completed by the this one of a kind artemedis fan that also has rustic materials and a contemporary flair.
