Peter Rymwid Photographer The kitchen in this beautiful old home in Montclair was small and dark and unattractive. By using some of the length in the adjoining dining room, the kitchen was expanded to accommodate a small island with seating for 2 and a steam oven. Double panel wall cabinets extend to the ceiling with a large crown molding details which were found in homes of this age. Clean white subway tiles were selected for the backslash with a white and gray glass tile feature for above the Wolf Range. the easy to care for glass is unexpected as marble is many times selected for this detail. The Sub Zero refrigerator was paneled to match the cabinets and integrate into the design. A banquette was designed an built to allow for the maximum seating for this young family. A very small and awkward powder room was relocated to make way for a nicely sized walk in pantry.

Davonport Holkham shaker-style cabinetry with exposed butt hinges was chosen for a classic look and its smaller proportions in this Victorian country kitchen. Hand painted in a beautiful light stone (Slate 11 – from Paint & Paper Library) and heritage green (Farrow & Ball’s studio green), the colour scheme provides the perfect canvas for the antique-effect brushed brass accessories. A traditional style white porcelain butler sink with brass taps is positioned in front of the large sash window, providing a stylish focal point when you enter the room. Then at the heart of the kitchen is a freestanding-style island (topped with the same white quartz worktop as the rest of the room). Designed with plenty of storage in the way of cupboards and drawers (as well as breakfast bar seating for 2), it acts as a prep table that is positioned in easy reach of the professional quality Miele induction hob and ovens. These elements help nod to the heritage of the classic country kitchen that would have originally been found in the property. Out of the main cooking zone, but in close proximity to seating on the island, a breakfast cupboard/drinks cabinet houses all of Mr Edward’s coffee gadgets at worktop level. Above, several shelves finished with opulent mirrored glass and back-lit lights showcase the couples’ selection of fine cut glassware. This creates a real wow feature in the evening and can be seen from the couples’ large round walnut dining table which is positioned with views of the English-country garden. The overall style of the kitchen is classic, with a very welcoming and homely feel. It incorporates pieces of charming antique furniture with the clean lines of the hand painted Davonport cabinets marrying the old and the new.

The owner of this home wished to transform this builder basic home to a European treasure. Having traveled the world, moved from San Francisco and now living in wine country she knew that she wanted to celebrate The charm of France complete with an French range, luxury refrigerator and wine cooler.

After! This beautifully updated kitchen features painted cabinetry, a new custom island, new appliances, new open access to the adjacent family room, a white subway tile backsplash in a herringbone pattern, a marble quartz countertop, black and white porcelain tile and a soft gray paint. The modern traditional pendant lights add a touch of whimsy.

Heritage Bay project in Naples Florida: We removed the dining room wall to make an more open kitchen plan. We cut the wall down to the same dimensions as the other side of the kitchen to keep the kitchen symmetrical. Added new Granite tops, a Beige Glass Bask splash and a new sink. The client elected to have a painting contractor paint the cabinets white.
