The design criteria for this home was to create an open floor plan while still defining the various uses within the space. Through the play of finishes and architectural decisions, the kitchen, living room, and dining room flow well from space to space.

This L-shaped island and bench seat kitchen has been one of our most popular designs in our showroom at 1499 West 3500 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84115. The design is by Emily Haroldsen one of our in-house designers. The cabinets are by KitchenCraft and feature both Wilsonart High-Def Laminate on the back countertop. Two custom-built moveable islands create flexible counter space in this long but relatively narrow kitchen. New walnut lower cabinets were meticulously matched to the uppers to create a seamless update consistent with the period architectural style of this 1908 Portland foursquare style home. Luxurious modern take on a traditional white Italian villa. An entry with a silver domed ceiling, painted moldings in patterns on the walls and mosaic marble flooring create a luxe foyer. Into the formal living room, cool polished Crema Marfil marble tiles contrast with honed carved limestone fireplaces throughout the home, including the outdoor loggia. Ceilings are coffered with white painted crown moldings and beams, or planked, and the dining room has a mirrored ceiling. Bathrooms are white marble tiles and counters, with dark rich wood stains or white painted. The hallway leading into the master bedroom is designed with barrel vaulted ceilings and arched paneled wood stained doors. The master bath and vestibule floor is covered with a carpet of patterned mosaic marbles, and the interior doors to the large walk in master closets are made with leaded glass to let in the light. The master bedroom has dark walnut planked flooring, and a white painted fireplace surround with a white marble hearth. The kitchen features white marbles and white ceramic tile backsplash, white painted cabinetry and a dark stained island with carved molding legs. Next to the kitchen, the bar in the family room has terra cotta colored marble on the backsplash and counter over dark walnut cabinets. This kitchen was meant to entertain, as well as prepare fabulous gourmet meals. The oversized island is quite a statement piece, and a typical countertop thickness just wouldn't do. To remedy this, we added a much thicker edge, giving the countertop great visual weight that is in proportion and scale to the vaulted ceilings. For an extra added detail, we specified a chiseled edge to contrast with the smooth top, but complement the rustic feel of the stone throughout the house, as well as the home's exterior. Design Services Provided - Architect was asked to convert this 1950's Split Level Style home into a Traditional Style home with a 2-story height grand entry foyer. The new design includes modern amenities such as a large 'Open Plan' kitchen, a family room, a home office, an oversized garage, spacious bedrooms with large closets, a second floor laundry room and a private master bedroom suite for the owners that includes two walk-in closets and a grand master bathroom with a vaulted ceiling. The Architect presented the new design using Professional 3D Design Software. This approach allowed the Owners to clearly understand the proposed design and secondly, it was beneficial to the Contractors who prepared Preliminary Cost Estimates. The construction duration was nine months and the project was completed in September 2015. The client is thrilled with the end results! We established a wonderful working relationship and a lifetime friendship. I am truly thankful for this opportunity to design this home and work with this client!
