Interior Design by Smith & Thomasson Interiors. White painted built-ins and dark wood accents pull together this once disjointed kitchen, dining area and sitting room. As gourmet cooks and gracious hosts, the Owners primary goal for the residential remodel was to create an open space that would be perfect for entertaining and family gatherings. The first course of action in opening up the kitchen was to remove the floor to ceiling bookshelves that obscured the view to the living and dining areas. A furniture-style island and banquette now occupy the space and graciously create a central gathering area around a beautifully appointed pedestal dining table with a wood planked top. Clear views are experienced from all angles of the space now and are conducive to socialization between chef and guests. The range wall is highlighted by a custom copper range hood anchored on a full height backsplash of glass tile made from recycled glass bottles, a modern interpretation of the classic subway tile pattern. Flanking the hood are wood accented upper cabinets with seeded glass insets and painted base cabinets creating a symmetrical elevation. A wall of floor to ceiling timeless flat panel storage cabinets line the back wall of the kitchen, creating a backdrop for the distressed wood armoire style paneled refrigerator. The painted cabinetry extends past the entrance into the sitting area where the existing wood burning fireplace was updated with paneling to match the new cabinetry. Classic neutral furnishings with subtle patterns in the sitting area create the perfect place to read a book or converse with a friend. Immediately upon completion, the Owner’s began cooking and entertaining in their new space. Successful on all counts, the remodel has created a casual yet elegant Great Room in which to spend time with family and friends.

This classic traditional kitchen works perfect in this Tudor home. The previous kitchen was knotty pine and very country. Our client was looking for a modern kitchen that would fit with the traditional exterior of the home. The white perimeter cabinets we took to the ceiling and stacked for a clean line and maximum storage. The large island is perfect for prep work and serving a large buffet when entertaining. The paneled appliances keep the kitchen clean and blend into the adjoining cabinetry. A few special details we included are the pull-out shelves in the built-in pantry, for easy access to the items that usually get lost in the back, and a shallow top drawer under the cooktop, for utensils. This kitchen is perfect for our client.

Lighting can have a dramatic impact on a kitchen, and this was no exception. Additional overhead lights were added to provide highly visible work surfaces. Decorative Swarovski crystal pendants over the island were carefully chosen to pick up the subtle amber hints in the mosaic glass accent tile, hardwood flooring and window trim. Innovative use of Tile // The design called for both walls of the butler’s pantry to feature 3x12 subway tile from the counter to the ceiling. // Client wanted the subway tile to flow through the cabinets. But we couldn’t hang the heavy upper cabinets on the tile. So we tiled inside the cabinets. Now the tile appears to flow seamlessly through the cabinet.

While renovating the main living spaces we gave the kitchen a quick facelift so it could flow with the living spaces better. The kitchen will be fully renovated with new extension and rooflight installation later.

Beautiful white enameled cabinetry with white wood plank ceiling. 8" quartered white oak floors. Island painted a contrasting color. Pot filler over Wolf commercial range, seating at island with breakfast room beyond that overlooks the pool and patio area. The kitchen is open to the living room area, and the lanai room, which is heated and cooled, is beyond through the dark stained doors. What a terrific kitchen and gathering area!
