This project began with a handsome center-entrance Colonial Revival house in a neighborhood where land values and house sizes had grown enormously since my clients moved there in the 1980s. Tear-downs had become standard in the area, but the house was in excellent condition and had a lovely recent kitchen. So we kept the existing structure as a starting point for additions that would maximize the potential beauty and value of the site A highly detailed Gambrel-roofed gable reaches out to the street with a welcoming entry porch. The existing dining room and stair hall were pushed out with new glazed walls to create a bright and expansive interior. At the living room, a new angled bay brings light and a feeling of spaciousness to what had been a rather narrow room. At the back of the house, a six-sided family room with a vaulted ceiling wraps around the existing kitchen. Skylights in the new ceiling bring light to the old kitchen windows and skylights. At the head of the new stairs, a book-lined sitting area is the hub between the master suite, home office, and other bedrooms.

A whimsical English garden was the foundation and driving force for the design inspiration. A lingering garden mural wraps all the walls floor to ceiling, while a union jack wood detail adorns the existing tray ceiling, as a nod to the client’s English roots. Custom heritage blue base cabinets and antiqued white glass front uppers create a beautifully balanced built-in buffet that stretches the east wall providing display and storage for the client's extensive inherited China collection.

The dining room is to the right of the front door when you enter the home. We designed the trim detail on the ceiling, along with the layout and trim profile of the wainscoting throughout the foyer. The walls are covered in blue grass cloth wallpaper and the arched windows are framed by gorgeous coral faux silk drapery panels.

Add flair and fun to a space by displaying this unique patchwork rug. This work of art is composed of different original rugs, knotted together for a stunning result. Colors range from dark wine red to bright azure; neutral greys and beiges help balance out the piece. This handmade rug was produced at the RugKnots facility in Pakistan, and is made of pure wool for ultimate quality and comfort. It would look lovely in a kids' room or casual family room. This dining room combines modern, rustic and classic styles. The colors are inspired by the original art work placed on the accent wall. Dining room accessories are understated to compliment the dining room painting. Custom made draperies complete the look. Natural fabric for the upholstery chairs is selected to work with the modern dining room rug. A rustic chandelier is high above the dining room table to showcase the painting. Overlooking the river down a sweep of lawn and pasture, this is a big house that looks like a collection of small houses. The approach is orchestrated so that the view of the river is hidden from the driveway. You arrive in a courtyard defined on two sides by the pavilions of the house, which are arranged in an L-shape, and on a third side by the barn The living room and family room pavilions are clad in painted flush boards, with bold details in the spirit of the Greek Revival houses which abound in New England. The attached garage and free-standing barn are interpretations of the New England barn vernacular. The connecting wings between the pavilions are shingled, and distinct in materials and flavor from the pavilions themselves. All the rooms are oriented towards the river. A combined kitchen/family room occupies the ground floor of the corner pavilion. The eating area is like a pavilion within a pavilion, an elliptical space half in and half out of the house.
