House with a Red Wall

This single family home sits on a tight, sloped site. Within a modest budget, the goal was to provide direct access to grade at both the front and back of the house. The solution is a multi-split-level home with unconventional relationships between floor levels. Between the entrance level and the lower level of the family room, the kitchen and dining room are located on an interstitial level. Within the stair space “floats” a small bathroom. The generous stair is celebrated with a back-painted red glass wall which treats users to changing refractive ambient light throughout the house. Black brick, grey-tinted glass and mirrors contribute to the reasonably compact massing of the home. A cantilevered upper volume shades south facing windows and the home’s limited material palette meant a more efficient construction process. Cautious landscaping retains water run-off on the sloping site and home offices reduce the client’s use of their vehicle. 階段のリフォームを検討するにあたり、特に気をつけておきたいチェックポイントとして、安全性、機能性、そしてデザイン性があげられます。家の間取りや家族構成に合った階段デザインを選ぶことは、快適で安全な暮らしの鍵となります。選択した方法によってはリフォーム費用が高額になったり、工期が長くなったりする場合がありますので、あらかじめ取り入れたい機能の優先順位を決め、予算と相談しながらプランを選ぶようにしましょう。

安全な階段の種類を選ぶ

住まいの中でも階段は事故が起こりやすい場所。特に高齢者や子供がいるご家庭では、まずは安全性が確保できるよう工夫することが大切です。階段のデザインには昇降法別に「直階段」「屈折階段」「かね折れ階段」などの種類があります。その中でも特に危ないとされている「回り階段」「螺旋階段」「曲がり階段」を避け、手すりを設置する、踏み面に滑りにくい加工をするといった対策を取っておくと安心です。また、階段の途中に踊り場を設けたり、人感センサーライトやフットライトを設置したり、部材にカーペットやファブリック、コルクなどの素材を選んだりすると、さらに高い安全性を確保することができます。

階段のデザイン性と機能性を吟味する

階段は存在感が大きくひときわ目立つ住宅設備ですので、デザインも慎重に選びましょう。例えば「螺旋階段」は、小さなスペースにも設置することができるだけでなく、上階からの光を取り入れられるといった利点がある一方、上り下りがしづらい、方向感覚を失いやすいなどの欠点があります。「箱階段」は、階段下にトイレや収納スペースを設けることができるので、デッドスペースを有効利用することが可能になります。一方、圧迫感を感じる、設置場所が限定される、工費が高額になる、といった側面も考慮する必要があります。工期や予算が限られている場合、階段全体をリノベーションする代わりに、古く痛んだ表面を重ね張りしたり、手すりの素材を木製からアイアン製やアルミ製にするだけでも、部屋の雰囲気をガラッと変えることができます。

家族思いの動線を作る

一昔前は階段と言えば玄関に設置された玄関階段が主流でしたが、最近では家族の動線を家の中心に集めるよう「リビング階段」にリフォームする家が増えつつあります。どこにいても家族の気配を感じられる位置に階段を移動させることによって、家族間のコミュニケーションアップにつながります。また、1階の水回りスペースと2階のベランダをより短い動線で結ぶと、洗濯物を干す作業が楽になり日々の暮らしの中で快適さを実感できるようになります。
